There’s something about the underlying theme of “indulgence” that is synonymous with this time of year which seems to annually intensify my sweet tooth. Now usually, I consider myself more of a savory food person than a dessert person, but I occasionally encounter an insatiable craving for something chocolaty, and there is virtually nothing that can stand in my way when the craving hits.

Enter, Rick’s Dessert Diner.

If you’ve lived in Sacramento for more than five minutes, odds are you’ve visited Rick’s Dessert Diner, and odds are, you loved it. According to their Web site, Rick’s Dessert Diner boasts more than 285 delicious items, each of which are made fresh daily on site. Their counter display is filled with cakes, cheesecakes, tortes, tarts, pies, cookies and pastries.

I had the pleasure of perusing the selection at Rick’s the other evening, and (after what felt like an hour of laboring) ultimately decided on a Zebra Fudge Brownie, which is a fudge brownie with a swirl of cream cheese. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Perfectly dense and chocolaty, the brownie was exactly what I needed to curb that craving, and was such a generous portion that I got to snack on it for dessert the next day as well.

In addition to the decadent desserts, one of the best parts of Rick’s Dessert Diner is the generous late-night hours of operation! Particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, Rick’s is there for you when hunger strikes in the wee hours:

Tuesday through Thursday: 10 AM – 12 AM
Friday and Saturday: 10 AM – 1 AM
Sunday: Noon – 11 PM
Monday: 10 AM – 11 PM
