As we mentioned in our 2011 Food Trends post on SacFoodies, food trucks are all the rage! To celebrate this trend, more than a dozen food trucks from throughout Northern California will converge at SactoMoFo (the Sacramento Mobile Food Festival), Saturday, April 30 from Noon to 6:00pm at Fremont Park.
The event is FREE to attend and free valet bike parking will be available to those of you who chose to bike to the event, courtesy of SABA.
Some of the event vendors include: Mini Burger Truck, Spencer on the Go, Roli Roti, Adobo Hobo, Sweetface Bakery, Chocolate Fish Coffee, Mama Kim on the Go, FatFace, Red Truck, Happy Go Lucky, Hapa SF, Curry Up Now, Whole Foods, Yogurtagogo, Chairman Bro Bun Truck, Sacramento taco trucks, a homemade ice cream vendor from Davis and many more!
While all the vendor slots have been filled, this 100% volunteer-driven event could still use some support in the form of sponsorships or donations. For the complete list of vendors and details on how you can help, please visit the event site at www.sactomofo.com.
Be sure to mark your calendars for April 30 and spread the word about this fun event! Some of the SacFoodies plan to attend the event, so we hope to see you there!

Soil Born Farms' Sunday Supper, Sacramento
This past Sunday, my friend Jamie and I volunteered as chefs at Soil Born Farms for their monthly fundraising dinner, Sunday Supper.
We worked under the direction of Dominic Mogavero, the Kitchen & Demo Coordinator for Soil Born Farms, who created the AMAZING menu and organized much of the day. The menu consisted of herbed lentil and kale soup with rosemary, cheese crostini; marinated purple and green cabbage salad with a spicy citrus dressing, topped with matchstick watermelon Diakon radish; stuffed portabella mushrooms with almond scented quinoa, topped with a medallion of goat cheese and a dusting of Parmesan Reggiano; roasted winter vegetables with fennel; brined roasted chicken with a creamy green garlic and leek sauce and homemade carrot cake. All of this for $25!
This family style dinner was a great way to showcase the Farm’s fresh produce and the talent they employ. If you are interested in learning more about the Farm or would like to volunteer, please click here!

A child’s first birthday is a pretty big deal…especially for Mom! I must admit, I’ve been planning my son’s first birthday for about 10 months, so when the big day was nearly here, I threw on my event planning hat and went to work. First order of business was the theme, and there was no question it had to be a Special Agent Oso party. To say my son loves Oso would be a vast understatement. From invitations to goodie bags, it was all Oso. So it was imperative we also have a Special Agent Oso cake as well…enter the Frosted Cake Shop.
I knew I wanted lots of color and Oso on the cake in some way, and what owner/baker extraordinaire Tessa Lindow created far surpassed our expectations. First, she made buttercream look like fondant, something I didn’t know was humanly possible. Second, she didn’t just nail the little marzipan Oso, but she created images of Dotty, Wolfie and Paw Pilot too (if you have a child under the age of three, you know exactly what I’m referring to). But the biggest surprise, and the one that literally brought a tear to my eye, was the special cake she prepared especially for my son.
I haven’t even mentioned that the cake was delicious, light and perfectly sweet – a real crowd pleaser! We ordered the Vanilla Butter cake with Chocolate Buttercream filling and can’t wait to have Tessa make us another cake because her options – including Classic Chocolate Cake with Peanut Buttercream – sound heavenly.

A BIG Thank You to Bel Air, Sacramento
As part of our job here at Fleishman-Hillard we wear many hats and recently, Kris Caputo Hurley and I put on our director/cue card holder hats to film a video series for our client the United States Potato Board (USPB). The USPB asked us to create a video series with the objective of educating consumers about the seven different types of potatoes. Can YOU name all seven types? (Answer is at the bottom of this post).
Part of the education included where to find potatoes, what you should be looking for and what to do if you can’t find a particular type. That meant finding a grocery store that would allow our film crew in and let us play with their potatoes. Lucky for us our friend/recipe developer/food stylist Patty Mastracco is also the Senior Food Editor for the Raley’s, Bel Air and Nob Hill magazine, Something Extra and was able to put us in touch with the right people to make this happen.
We arrived in the wee early hours on a Friday morning and were greeted by the Produce Manager John Phut. John was awesome. We knew that we would be treated well by the staff at Bel Air but did not know they were going to roll out the red carpet! We got the first-class treatment. Everything from ordering us extra potatoes – to letting us rearrange the displays – to bringing out extra props and stands. Our in-store video shoot was a success and we could not have done it without the help and generosity of the staff at Bel Air.
A BIG thank you to Produce Manager John Thut, Store Director Damon Moreno and our past FH intern turned Raley’s Communications Specialist, Ashley Zepernick!!

Perry Creek Winery, El Dorado County
Ever since our latest ‘Bring Out the Barrel’ ticket giveaway’ on SacFoodies, I’ve been eager to go wine tasting and check out the nearby El Dorado County wineries.
A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I finally made the one-hour drive to El Dorado County, where we visited Perry Creek Winery on the Fair Play Loop. We had a great experience—not only was the weather great, but the wine was too.
We called ahead of time (which was recommended) to make a reservation for a complete winery experience—wine (and barrel) tasting, a winery tour and a nice outdoor lunch. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted by the tasting room staff and treated to a short and informative tour around the estates led by the winemaker, Jonathan.. Perry Creek did not disappoint. Jonathan was not only a true wine expert, but was very friendly and talked with us about the wine in way that was easy for us non-wine experts to understand.
We were first guided around the tasting room and up to the winery where we were able to barrel taste and walk amongst hundreds of barrels of wine. It was very surprising to learn that Perry Creek’s Altitude Syrah grapes, from the same vines but picked at different times and placed in different barrels, can each taste totally different from each other.
After barrel tasting in the winery, we headed to the tasting room where we were able to try a few different wines. Flavorful cheeses and tastes of Perry Creek’s delicious olive oils and vinaigrettes were also provided alongside fresh bread for perfect pairings. The tasting room even features a gourmet deli case full of artisan meats, cheeses, fresh bread and other snacks for purchase.
We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying lunch out on the tasting room’s patio, which Jonathan had arranged for us from a local restaurant called the Gold Vine Grill. I had the delicious Turkey Reuben Panini (sliced turkey, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and roasted red pepper spread on grilled ciabatta bread) while my boyfriend had the Buck’s BBQ Burger (seasoned all beef patty with bacon, cheddar cheese and a tangy barbeque sauce). It was nice to dine outside while discussing the history of Perry Creek wines with Jonathan.
We had a great time at Perry Creek and are already researching other El Dorado County wineries with hopes of planning another wine tasting trip up there sometime soon!
Note: Passport Weekend is coming up soon! On March 26-27 and April 2-3, over 26 El Dorado County wineries (including Perry Creek!) will be hosting the region’s annual Passport wine and food event featuring plenty of wine and food pairings, barrel tastings, enjoyable art and music and fun-loving participants. Tickets cost $70 per person ($26.61 for designated drivers) for the whole weekend. A limited number of tickets are still left (the event usually sells out) and can be purchased by calling (800) 306-3956. For more information, visit the El Dorado Winery Association’s website.
