The bottled cocktails at Hock Farm are my new favorite thing. The refreshing Gin and Tonic and the enticing Rum & Soda (with house made cream soda!) are serving farm fresh realness with a kick right now, but watch out for other seasonal shifts that’ll rub you the right way, too.

Gold Rush Beer Crawl
Interested in slowing it down this Labor Day weekend? How about kicking things off with a crawl… the Gold Rush Beer Crawl that is. This Friday, August 30, the Capitol City will be turning back the clock in Old Sacramento for the third annual Gold Rush Beer Crawl, as part of the 13th Annual Gold Rush Days weekend.
Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight, you can enjoy a 6-9 oz. glass of crisp beer at 9 different establishments for just $10, while enjoying dancing, street dramas, wagon rides, gold panning, horse-drawn carriage rides, crafts and more along the way.
Escape reality by coming dressed as a gold miner, gunfighter or saloon girl – we hear you will get the best service if you dress the part!
Don’t miss the opportunity to get your ticket as they are selling quickly. Purchase tickets online at Eventbrite, or at one of the venues in advance.
Davis Bike and Brew Fest
I grew up in Davis, the bicycle capitol of the United States, so naturally it doesn’t faze me that the town would have a community-wide celebration to raise funds for the United States Bicycle Hall of Fame (located in Davis, of course). But when I heard that they were having a Bike and Brew Fest, as part of a larger Davis Beer Week to raise money for the Bicycle Hall of Fame, I was definitely surprised.
Knowing how fun a Davis festival can be from my childhood memories, I definitely will not be missing this exciting benefit. This Saturday, August 24 from 3:30 to 8:00 pm in Davis’s Central Park I invite you to “hop” on over to the bicycling capitol of the United States with me to take part in this exciting, one-of-a-kind event and taste beer for a good cause.
The evening festivities will include live music from three different bands, local food, children’s’ activities, beer from 50 breweries and wine from 10 wineries! Whether you are looking to taste the various craft libations, be a designated driver or take part in the entertainment, there is something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind event.
Tickets include access to the park and entertainment as well as a glass of beer and one complementary wine tasting. Ride your bike, or have a designated driver take you over to Davis and see what my hometown has to offer. Buy your tickets here today.
La Bombe Ice Cream & More
After playing tennis with some friends yesterday at McKinley Park, nothing sounded better than some chilly ice cream after a heated match. Fortunately for us, we discovered one of the most delicious spots in Sacramento nearby: La Bombe Ice Cream & More.
La Bombe is a European-style ice cream parlor that serves over 20 different flavors of locally made Gunther’s ice cream, as well as salads, sandwiches and more. Their specialty, however, are their Les Bombe Glacés. The Les Bombe Glacés are domes of layered ice cream dolloped onto cookie wafers and topped with something sweet. You can pick a variety of flavors that will satisfy any craving.

I decided to purchase the special of the day: the Salted Caramel Affogatto. This creation was made with two scoops of their special salted caramel ice cream drenched in a shot of hot espresso. This treat melted in my mouth and was the perfect end to a long summer day. I plan to come back to La Bombe Ice Cream & More soon because I couldn’t get enough!
For more information on what La Bombe Ice Cream & More has to offer, make sure to check out their tempting menu (please note this link opens up a PDF version of their menu).

6th Annual Midtown Cocktail Week
(Photo courtesy of Midtown Cocktail Week)
I’ve got three words for you Sacramento: Midtown Cocktail Week. That’s right, next week marks the start of five full days filled with craft creations and specialty concoctions from some of Sacramento’s most talented mixologists and bartenders. Starting Wednesday 8/21 and continuing through Sunday 8/25, Midtown will be buzzing with an array of events dedicated to its cocktail scene.
In its 6th year, Midtown Cocktail Week is no small event. In fact, it is one of the contributing factors to Sacramento being recognized as one of the country’s hottest cocktail destinations, in addition to Shady Lady and Pour House also being named among the Top 55 Bourbon Bars in the US.
A few of the main events include a cocktail competition and tasting at LowBrau, a Kabuki Show at Hook and Ladder, a Gatsby-era party at Grange, The West-End Art Show at Blackbird Kitchen + Bar, and the finale closing party at Red Rabbit which will feature plenty of whiskey and county fair inspired eats.
Several pop-up events will ensure that the cocktail celebration continues on throughout the week and includes tequila education class at Zocalo, a rookie bartender competition at Golden Bear, a molecular drinks course at Centro, a casino themed 1960’s-era Vegas party at Vanguard and a Bloody Mary Brunch at Pour House featuring the #1 rated Bloody Mary in California for 2012.
The Midtown Cocktail Week website is the go-to spot to map out the events you’d like to attend, plus it features some great specialty cocktail recipes if you’d like to test out your bartending skills at home.
If you plan on attending any of next week’s event be sure to keep your social following in the know by using #MCWSac. Also, there is no excuse not to drink responsibility. Use code MIDTOWNCOCKTAIL on the Uber app and receive a free ride home (up to $30.00).
During this week I plan on seeking out a craft concoction that I would usually order and there will be plenty of places to make that happen! What is your favorite cocktail in Sacramento?
