For those of us that work in downtown Sacramento, keeping us in the area after work hours is not easy to do with midtown’s many bars and restaurants luring us away after we leave the office. On a recent visit to Blackbird Kitchen + Beer Gallery though, two of us Sac Foodies found ourselves happily whiling away the evening without the slightest thought of our usual midtown haunts.
This February, Blackbird reopened its doors with a new identity. They now feature dishes starring local farm-fresh produce and incredibly fresh fish for their many raw offerings and to live up to their namesake as a “Beer Gallery,” Blackbird also boasts over 50 beers on tap from all over the world. It’s not often you have the chance to partake in upscale food with such a wide range of craft beers, but we highly suggest you visit Blackbird soon to do so. Below is a recap of our delicious evening.
Salmon Crudo with Pickled Shishito Peppers
This dish was full of flavor and was the perfect size for an appetizer. The tangy peppers cut the fattiness of the salmon and the crunch of the sea salt on top created and exceptional bite.
Duck Confit with Fresh Peach Gastrique
This dish was another winner. The sweet peaches complemented the salty duck for a petite bite that left us wanting more. This paired perfectly with our beer selections as well. Heirloom Tomatoes
With Burrata, Radish, Black Volcanic Salt and Sherry Vinaigrette
This dish was an absolute star. The juicy fresh tomatoes were perfectly ripe and the creamy burrata was clearly high quality and fresh. The radishes added a bit of heat, and the sherry cut the richness of the cheese, while the salt heightened the entire dish. This is the epitome of a perfect summer salad! Scarborough Fair Fried Chicken with Fries
The fried chicken is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. It is available in a two or five piece and was perfectly seasoned and crisp without being greasy. The fries were thin cut and satisfying and, of course, great with our beer flight.
Captain’s Chowder
Featuring Pollock, Squid, Mussels, House Smoked Clams, Potato and Grilled Bread
This creamy, smoky chowder is another one of the chef’s signature dishes. This is unlike any chowder you can find in town. It clearly has a depth of flavor most chowders can’t accomplish, in large part because of the addition of the house smoked clams. Rich and filling, we’re excited to go back for another bowl on a cool fall day.
Beer Flight
We were able to pick and choose from Blackbird’s extensive beer menu to curate a selection that allowed for several different flavor profiles and complemented our various dishes. The Allagash White rose to the top as a light and tasty choice that was perfect for a warm summer evening. We also enjoyed Hottenroth Beliner Weisse, Pintail Pale, Sculpin IPA, and Boulder Shake. Our flight was rounded out by a Mermaid’s Red from Coronado Brewing Company which was fantastic ale.Blackbird Kitchen + Beer Gallery
