Julie Berge
Favorite food: My favorite food is anything I don’t have to cook. Don’t get me wrong, I love food, I just find more enjoyment out of the experience of eating it – particularly with other people. When I think of a favorite food or dish, there is usually a good story behind it.
Favorite local restaurants (formal dining, ethnic, neighborhood bistro): It’s easier for me to think of my favorite spots in basic meal categories – breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks! For breakfast on the weekends, I love the old world feel of the Tower Café. I indulge in the Famous French Toast dipped in custard at least once a month and then take my dog Matti for a walk around William Land Park to erase any food remorse – I can never just order the half plate. My favorite lunch spot is the vegetarian drive-up restaurant Sunflower in Old Fair Oaks. My regular order is a super nutburger, two side orders of tortilla chips (one for myself and the other for the family of chickens that roam outside) and a small banana shake. For dinner with friends, I love to go to places where we can share plates. My top two favorites are Mikuni – where the puff daddy, zig-zag roll and a peach bellini are always a must, and Tapa the World – anything from the menu and a pitcher of sangria never lets me down. For a glass of wine after work, my new favorite is the L Wine Lounge. I’ve only been there a few times now, but I enjoy the modern décor, friendly service and impressive wine list. I also highly recommend the cheese plate!
Favorite dining experience of all time: Celebrating the completion of my master’s degree with my closest friends at Mason’s Restaurant. Ahhhh, nothing compares to the sweet taste of success!
Earliest food-related memory from childhood: Making cupcake cones to share with my classmates on my 8th birthday.
Most impressive dish you’ve whipped up using only ingredients on hand: Anything I make that turns out edible is impressive to me.
Favorite family recipe:My great-grandmother Veronica Berryessa’s enchiladas. Without fail, this family dish is served at every wedding, reunion, birthday and holiday bash, so whenever I make it at home I not only enjoy the taste but think about all the fond memories I associate with it.

I’ve had the pleausure of trying Julie’s grandma’s enchiladas and they are amazing. They are like no enchilada I’ve ever had. You can just tell it’s an authentic family recipe. Can you share???

Julie is right on about all her choices although I haven’t tried Mason’s yet (but on my list and now sooner).
