Sometimes we SacFoodies explore outside Sacramento’s city limits. It’s not that there’s any scarcity of diverse food options here, but there’s always something exciting about seeing what other cities have to offer. On a recent trip to Davis, I spent a long, hot day biking on the cozy college town’s lovely path. At the end of it, tired and hungry, I visited a local gem: The Yeti Restaurant. There are few outdoor patios better in Davis, and not many establishments offering both authentic Nepali and Indian cuisine!
Indoors, the décor and music invite visitors into a Himalayan-inspired atmosphere with comfortable seating, warm lighting, and excellent service! The menu is varied and customers can hardly go wrong. Fan favorites include the Tikka Masala, the lamb or veggie Momos (traditional dumplings), and the many types of curries—just make sure to specify the level of spice you prefer! After the heat of the evening, I really enjoyed my Thai beer, Singha, commonly offered in Northern India and assorted Meat Plate Appetizer.
Hope you are inspired to diverge from your normal culinary routine! I’m certainly glad I wandered into The Yeti Restaurant. Timely and accessible service staff, regular specials, and humanitarian efforts like donating all the tips to relief efforts the week of the April 2015 Nepal earthquake, make this one of my favorite places in Davis.
Cascaderade
As I was strolling through Costco a few weeks ago, I ended up in the beer section. Somehow this seems to occur every time I make a Costco run. Guilty pleasure I guess. My eyes are trained to look for new and interesting beers that I’ve never had before, and this time was no exception. They immediately latched onto a green-labeled bottle, bearing the title “Cascaderade.”
“Is it like a hoppy Gatorade?” my brain churned. “Or maybe a play-on-words between Cascade hops and lemonade?” At any rate, the 22-ounce bottle made its way to the checkout line. Cool label, local beer (Sudwerk Brewing, Davis), and it’s an India Pale LAGER?! Ok, you’ve won me over.
On the label, an 1800s-style map of the Pacific Northwest is shown with a dotted trail leading from the Yakima Valley (home to fields of delicious Cascade hop vines) to the Sudwerk Brewing Co. in Davis, California.
When the dry-hopped IPL is poured, the familiar notes of citrus and bready resin fill the air. It has a piney, hoppy taste and has a nice golden auburn color. It has an ABV of 6.6% and 50 IBUs, making it a distinctly hoppy and bitter lager, but much less so than your traditional India Pale Ale. It’s a full-bodied beer, no doubt, but much less intense.
I think it would be safe to say that if I saw a Cascaderade stand selling drinks on the corner, I would be a loyal customer, especially on a hot summer day.
Davis Bike and Brew Fest
I grew up in Davis, the bicycle capitol of the United States, so naturally it doesn’t faze me that the town would have a community-wide celebration to raise funds for the United States Bicycle Hall of Fame (located in Davis, of course). But when I heard that they were having a Bike and Brew Fest, as part of a larger Davis Beer Week to raise money for the Bicycle Hall of Fame, I was definitely surprised.
Knowing how fun a Davis festival can be from my childhood memories, I definitely will not be missing this exciting benefit. This Saturday, August 24 from 3:30 to 8:00 pm in Davis’s Central Park I invite you to “hop” on over to the bicycling capitol of the United States with me to take part in this exciting, one-of-a-kind event and taste beer for a good cause.
The evening festivities will include live music from three different bands, local food, children’s’ activities, beer from 50 breweries and wine from 10 wineries! Whether you are looking to taste the various craft libations, be a designated driver or take part in the entertainment, there is something for everyone at this one-of-a-kind event.
Tickets include access to the park and entertainment as well as a glass of beer and one complementary wine tasting. Ride your bike, or have a designated driver take you over to Davis and see what my hometown has to offer. Buy your tickets here today.
Davis Farmers Market, Among the Nation’s Best
When the weather warms up and summer is in full bloom, one of the most anticipated activities for many is visiting local farmers markets. There is no better place to pick up delicious fruits, veggies, flowers and often times a variety of other specialty products from local vendors.
I’d have to say the most robust farmers market I ever visited was a Saturday afternoon market in New York’s Greenwich Village. Luckily for us in the Sacramento region, there is no need to travel far and wide to find a fun farmers market. In fact, the immensely popular market held year-round in Davis was named one of the top 10 in the nation by USA Today. The highly anticipated “Picnic in the Park” begins annually at the end of March and runs through October. This weekly Wednesday evening event was hailed for its social and family friendly aspect, as well its abundance of fresh goods.
Congratulations to our neighbor on this awesome shout out! In addition to the market in Davis, the Sacramento region hosts a dozen fabulous farmers markets throughout the week. Chances are there is one close to you! Click here for a list of local certified farmers markets. Enjoy!

Tres Hermanas, Davis
Brunch. It’s one of my favorite ways to spend a leisurely Sunday. Davis has a handful of notable options, from Café Bernardo to Caffé Italia, but last Sunday I wanted something a little different than the typical Benedict. We were wandering aimlessly around the downtown area for inspiration and found some on Second Street. Tres Hermanas serves breakfast food? Yes, mi amigo, they sure do!
I had the sausage and eggs plate, which came with beans, potatoes, salsa and warm tortillas.
I’m not sure the rest of the town realizes that Tres Hermanas is a breakfast option since the typically bustling restaurant was fairly quiet. And this Sunday that was A-OK by me; it meant that I didn’t feel bad savoring my cup of coffee just a little longer as we watched the world go by, or at least the usual mix of students and families in downtown Davis.
