Midtown Farmers Market
We love the Capitol Mall farmers market and it’s easy to forget the other great farmers markets across Sacramento. One of our favorites is the Midtown Farmers Market that happens every Saturday morning, year round, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
This farmers market is located in the heart of midtown on 20th Street in between J and L streets and makes for a great stop on a Saturday morning stroll. Afterwards, stop by the many great restaurants and coffee shops scattered across Midtown.

Queen Sheba: Ethiopia on Broadway

July 29, 2016 by SacFoodies

Sacramento is full of unique surprises, especially when it comes to its restaurant diversity. Take Broadway between 15th and 30th, for example. Cultural cuisines range from Chinese and Indian to Mexican and almost everything in between. Being vegan, I’m always looking for places that support my diet. I find that ethnic restaurants can be the best choice.
One of my favorites is Queen Sheba. Queen Sheba serves Ethiopian food that connects directly to its origins and culture. The dishes are made with traditional ingredients, such as lentils, potatoes and collards. They can also be served family style to be eaten with flat, sourdough bread called Injera.
The food at Queen Sheba is full of flavor that consists of sweet, sour, peppery and earthy hints.  Their dishes are made with a variety of spices such as turmeric, cloves, black cumin, and cinnamon. Many of their options can be served vegan, which is why I’m such a big fan. Not only is the food really tasty, but, as with many of these cultures, the dishes aren’t meat-centric. It’s almost as if they specialize in plant-based diet naturally.
Whether you’re an herbivore or an omnivore, try out Queen Sheba off of 17th and Broadway. I recommend the Vegetarian Combo with the Shiro Wot (which you’ll probably have to share).

This week’s finds feature a bounty of local produce, (not so) mini burgers, a taco salad bowl and some almonds we can’t get enough of.
Beautiful, fresh produce

A couple of “Cowbells” from Krush Burger. These mini burgers are loaded with bacon, onion straws, BBQ sauce and smoked Gouda.

Taco Salad Bowl with carnitas from La Posada

We can’t stop eating these flavored almonds from Winters Fruit Tree! We recommend the sesame flavor but feel free to give any of their 40 flavors a try.

The Capitol Mall Farmers’ Market takes place every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., May through September.
Check back next Thursday for more of our favorite “Farm to Office” finds.

A Night at Morton's

Morton’s The Steakhouse is an American institution. Their classic cocktails, choice wine selection and premium steaks have been an upscale dining staple for nearly 40 years. Morton’s Sacramento location recently renovated their dining space to a more modern look while still keeping the vibe classy.
Morton’s recently invited SacFoodies to a wine and dine night to celebrate the newly renovated restaurant. The event featured custom cocktails, a smattering of small bites and a great selection of wine, from Shiraz to Cabernet.

We were greeted with a selection of cocktails: Manhattans, French 75s and Raspberry Cosmopolitans. They were refreshing and tasty, perfect in the middle of a classic Sacramento heat wave.

Next, we got to taste crab cake sliders and delicious petite seared lamb chops. However, the highlight of the evening for me was the freshly cut steak sandwiches, paired with a fresh bun and horseradish. The steak was perfectly cooked and paired nicely with the Cabernet being served. The sandwiches were cut and served to order, allowing us to choose our cooking preparedness preference (I went with medium rare).

If you’re looking for a place for after work cocktails or want to have a classy night out, it’s hard to go wrong with a restaurant as reliable as Morton’s.

Traditional fast food, sort of

Being a vegan, it’s sometimes difficult going out of town and finding a restaurant that has options that fit my diet. Luckily there are places popping up all over that are committed to this alternative way of eating. If you’re near Rohnert Park on the way to the beach and looking for something to eat, go check out Amy’s Drive Thru.
Everything at Amy’s is vegetarian or vegan, organic and non-gmo. These qualities are hard to find at most restaurants, especially fast-food, which might give someone piece of mind before gorging. The menu consists of all the things you’ll find at fast-food cafes, such as burgers, fries, and milk shakes. Don’t let the label of vegetarian or vegan force you to abandon the adventure, because everything holds weight with most hamburger joints. Flavor and texture aren’t thrown to the side for something that might seem too healthy to be considered fast-food. Amy’s Drive Thru is yummy, some-what healthy goodness that might change your mind about a veggie burger.
