April is National Grilled Cheese Month and April 16 happens to be National Eggs Benedict Day. And while eggs benedict and grilled cheese don’t sound like two things to be celebrated at one time, the grilled cheese benedict from Bacon & Butter will have you questioning why this combination doesn’t have its own national day.

I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about Bacon & Butter. Friends, coworkers and many an online review have given me no reason to think the food at Bacon & Butter is anything short of incredible. Pair the reviews with rumors of substantial lines forming outside before the doors even open, and you’ve officially peaked my (and my taste buds’) interest.
I crawled out from under my rock and dropped in on National Eggs Benedict Day to get my first taste of Sacramento’s Best Brunch and the infamous grilled cheese benedict.  To make a long story short, Executive Chef and owner, Billy Zoellin, and the rest of the Bacon & Butter staff did not disappoint. Two perfectly poached eggs and thick cut bacon rest atop a grilled cheese sandwich comprised of Cheddar, Jack and Mozzarella between two soft slices of Bella Bru Challah bread and a liberal amount of some damn-good hollandaise.

For me, this was a true embodiment of what brunch should be: a meal combing the basic flavors of breakfast and lunch with deliciously prepared ingredients in a unique way. Everything about Bacon & Butter exceeded my expectations from service, to atmosphere and, most notably, the food (especially the freshly made Bacon Pineapple Fritters). The fact they use Farm to Fork ingredients isn’t bad either.

So well done, Bacon & Butter, you’ve successfully found a way to combine two seemingly different classics into a pair that fit together easier than Sunday morning. Check out the rest of the Bacon & Butter’s food, specialty cocktails and fresh baked goods here!

FREE BREAKFAST AND COFFEE FRIDAY AT MAYAHUEL

March 5, 2014 by SacFoodies

Weekday breakfasts may be one of my most favorite things. Saturdays and Sundays pack them in and you always face an impending wait. But on a weekday, when I should be at work and there are less people dining out, it seems as if going out to breakfast is more of a treat.
Now what’s a bigger treat than a free breakfast … and on a weekday no less? Well that’s what is happening this Friday, March 7 in Downtown Sacramento. Mayahuel on K Street is introducing its new breakfast menu by giving away free breakfast tacos and burritos as well as cups of delicious Pacha Coffee. Here’s the skinny:

Tasty n Sons, Portland, Oregon

August 31, 2012 by SacFoodies

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting one of my favorite US cities, Portland, Ore., to attend the International Food Bloggers Conference (IFBC) on behalf of one of our clients, the United States Potato Board. Tough job, right?
It gets better. Not only did I get to dine with award-winning cookbook author Diane Morgan, (her car license place says it all), as a Portland local she knew exactly where to take us: Tasty n Sons. And now I know why. As we made our brunch plans, Diane stressed that we needed to arrive earlier than their 9am Saturday morning opening time – and she was right. When we arrived at 8:45am there was already a line out the door…and it only grew longer as we waited in anticipation.

Sitting down at our table, I knew I was in for a treat when I was immediately impressed by the presentation of my iced coffee (Stumptown, of course). We started our meal with two “appetizers” (is it typical to order appetizers at brunch?) – Griddled Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Chocolate Potato Doughnuts (you did catch that I was in Portland on behalf of the US Potato Board, right?). If the bacon-wrapped dates weren’t delectable enough, the chocolate potato doughnut with crème anglaise was to-die-for. I only wished I could save room to get another order after the meal, for dessert.
Next up were the entrees, all of which are designed for sharing. Between the four of us, we tried:
•    Potatoes Bravas with over easy eggs (the most amazing flavors!)
•    BBQ Chicken Hash with potatoes topped with over easy egg (another winner)
•    Polenta & Sausage Ragu with mozzarella & fried egg (glad we shared because this dish is rich)
•    Summer Muffin with heirloom tomato, Beecher’s cheddar, summer greens, pickled beets & fried egg (cutting the sandwich into fourths left a perfect bite for everyone)
If I had to choose favorites, I would pick the Chocolate Potato Doughnuts and the Potatoes Bravas, but would easily order any of these menu items again next time I visit. Which reminds me, I’ve got to figure out a reason to get back to Portland and Tasty n Sons – it’s that good!
