This Thanksgiving, and always, we Sac Foodies have a lot to be thankful for. The list is long, but at the top we have family, friends and – of course – FOOD!
If you find yourself wanting to stay out of the kitchen this Thanksgiving, try one of the local establishments below and leave the cooking to the pros!
The Firehouse Restaurant in Old Sacramento will be serving dinner on Turkey Day from noon to 7 p.m. The four course menu includes Sweet Potato Bisque as a starter and Pumpkin Crème Brûlée for dessert!
Not in the mood for Turkey? Head to McCormick & Schmick’s for dinner. They will be serving their regular menu as well as a prix-fixe Thanksgiving meal option. Another seafood option is Scott’s – with Thanksgiving offerings of Roasted Australian Lobster Tail and Blackened Pacific Red Snapper Gumbo.
If you want to take in your Thanksgiving meal earlier in the day, try the Hyatt Regency’s bountiful buffet which will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Or, make a reservation for a three-course meal with all the trimmings, served at 6 p.m.
Thanksgiving French Style? Why not? La Provence, a French-Mediterranean restaurant in Roseville will serve their take on the meal from noon to 6 p.m.
Another Sacramento restaurant taking on the challenge of Thanksgiving is Piatti Ristorante. They’ll serve traditional fare with an Italian twist, including Proscuitto Di Parma for an appetizer, Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli as a main dish and Panna Cotta as a dessert choice.

Farewell, but not so long
This afternoon fellow Sac Foodies Brittany, Jenna and I had a commemorative last supper, so to speak, at neighboring restaurant 55 Degrees – a spot where we’ve held many business lunches, happy hours and even hosted a wedding shower for Sac Foodie Kim Bedwell.
On the third anniversary of its opening, today was the restaurant’s final day of business. In an email I received from owner Ali Mackani yesterday, he wrote:
Our game plan 3 years ago was to be part of the major re-revitalization plans on Capitol Mall and its promise of residential development. The promise unfortunately did not happen and, with the downturn in economy, we have to say enough is enough.
We are sad to see one of Sacramento’s finest restaurants close its doors as Mackani and Chef Luc Dendievel brought a unique and refreshing concept and cuisine to downtown Sacramento. But this definitely isn’t the last we’ll see of Mackani. His newest brainchild Lounge ON20 has quickly become a midtown hotspot and one of my personal favorite destinations for shared appetizers and glass of bubbly! If you haven’t checked it out already, read more here.
Venezuelan Night at The Shack
This Thursday night (July 24), The Shack will honor the new Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, with a night of food and fun inspired by her national cuisine, Venezuelan. The menu includes:
– Manchego Arepas: Thick corn tortilla split and stuffed with filling of choice (black beans, beef, chicken, etc.)
– Pabellon Criollo: Traditional shredded beef stew
– Tostones: Fried plantains with sea salt and cayenne
– Cuasacaca: Avocado salsa with fresh pepers and tomatoes
– Black Beans and Rice
– Snapper Criollo: Whole snapper rubbed with spice mix, topped with onions and peppers and baked in banana leaves
– Shrimp Ceviche served over shredded romaine with cilantro
– Venezuelan chocolate ice cream
Festivities usually start around 6:00 pm so stop by The Shack at 5201 Folsom Blvd. if you’re in the area!

If you’re planning to stay in, celebrate with this tasty Margarita Slush from Rachael Ray. Fellow SacFoodie Jenna Kirkwood has tried it and reports that it’s “tangy and sweet because of the lime sherbet and lemon sorbet, which also gives it a refreshing frothiness.”
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
