Most food trucks serve mouth-watering tacos, burgers, or other delicious fare to customers. One local non-profit is turning that concept on its head. The Reverse Food Truck (Link to website: http://sacrft.com/), run by Sacramento locals Richard and Zoey Goore, collects donations of fresh produce, healthy non-perishable items, and monetary support to aid local food banks, schools, and other organizations. Aiming to help alleviate hunger and malnutrition in the Sacramento region and educate the public about food insecurity, particularly among children, the Reverse Food Truck (link to Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SacRFT)
Currently the Reverse Food Truck collaborates with the Sacramento Hunger Coalition, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, and the Jewish Federation of the West, among others. Hunger, especially in children, has long been a concern of the couple; children living in poverty are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses like diabetes, more likely to need to be hospitalized for their illnesses, and less likely to finish high school. In Sacramento County, 1 in 5 people live in poverty and 1 in 4 people living in poverty are children.
“Sacramento is an amazing city, with so many community leaders and residents dedicated to making it a better place for all who live here. We are confident that this community will step up and help us put hunger in the rearview,” the Goores affirm in their pamphlets.
You can help make a difference by keeping an eye out for the Reverse Food Truck at farmers’ markets, food truck festivals, and other events in the Greater Sacramento Region, and, of course, donating fresh kale or your favorite veggies to help those in need!
Trucktoberfest in West Sacramento
The SacFoodies love a good food truck, (as evidenced here and here), and we’re also fans of great beer, (which we’ve mentioned here and here), which is why we’re loving the sound of this upcoming event. Trucktoberfest, taking place this Saturday, October 5th at River Walk Park in West Sacramento, will combine more than 20 local food trucks, a beer garden and live music – which sounds to us like the makings of a near-perfect Saturday afternoon. Not to mention that this event also benefits a bevy of great organizations, including the American Red Cross, West Sacramento Parks and Recreation, and the Yolo County Food Bank. And…admission is free! To learn more about Trucktoberfest, visit www.sactomofo.com or the Trucktoberfest 2013 Facebook page.
Thursday Capitol Mall Farmer’s Market
By Sara Ortega and Ana Marie Aguas
If there’s one event the SacFoodies look forward to this time of year, it’s the farmer’s market conveniently located right outside our office on Capitol Mall! We are always delighted every Thursday by the scent of grilling Indian cuisine, baking Italian pizza and some of the best food trucks in town, including, Krush Burger and Wicked ‘Wich.
It’s almost too good to be true! Some of the best fruit, vegetable, flower, herb and even artisan olive oil vendors offer their fine products for visitors to browse and purchase. Our personal favorite is the pistachio vendor that offers more than two dozen different pistachio flavors to fit any liking.
Market vendors are local and provide some truly unique and authentically grown products. Now through September 26, every Thursday, take a breath of fresh air and treat yourself to the ultimate Artisanal experience at the Capitol Mall Farmer’s Market.
