Sacramento Kings Fan Fest

Last week, SacFoodies gave you a look at the eats available around Golden 1 Center. This week, we’re giving you the scoop on some of the delicious offerings within the arena itself.
Eager to taste what we’ve been told is a concessions menu unlike any other arena, SacFoodies made sure to secure a few tickets to the Sacramento Kings Fan Fest this past weekend. This was one of the first opportunities to see the arena, and we were thrilled with what we saw. We were treated to an open Kings practice that included drills, a 30-minute scrimmage and a rookie dunk contest.
The arena is a beautiful piece of modern architecture with glass windows, state of the art technology (like the 4K jumbotron and a Wi-Fi network that can handle 500,000 Snapchat uploads a second) and wide open, easily walkable concourses.
But, of course, we’re all about the food. Luckily the Golden 1 Center has plenty of options. One of the coolest features of the arena is the emphasis on local restaurants and the concessions they’ve inspired. From Café Bernardo and Block Butcher Bar, to Petra Greek and Mikuni, many of the stands represent restaurants you would recognize as a Sacramento resident. See the full list here.
Part of our pack decided to try the LowBrau stand, where we ordered chicken sausages on LowBrau’s famous pretzel bun. With the Golden 1 Center working hard to recreate the Sacramento dining experience within the arena, the sausages were just like what you can order at the restaurant.

We paired our food with Sierra Nevada Torpedos, buying them from a conveniently located Sierra Nevada Draught House on the upper level. Another SacFoodie who joined us on our arena food tour opted for the red chili pork sandwich from Mulvaney’s B&L:

We are confident that the Golden 1 Center will be a fantastic addition to Sacramento and we’re excited to try all the food options it has to offer. Be sure to let us know what you think of Golden 1 Center’s local menu offerings in the comments below!

Sacramento is America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital

October 31, 2012 by SacFoodies

With the smell of rain in the air, the last farmers market of the season in Cesar Chavez Plaza was the perfect setting for a major announcement from Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson this morning.
Known popularly as The River City or The City of Trees, Sacramento can now lay claim to an exciting new moniker: America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital!
Surrounded by a sea of white chefs’ coats, Mayor Johnson was joined by nearly three dozen of the area’s top culinary talent to announce the new proclamation to an excited crowd of media, local officials and foodie enthusiasts.
“Right here in Sacramento, we have a lot to be proud of,” said the former NBA star and Sacramento native. “This is the best of Sacramento. This is the Dream Team of chefs in Sacramento!”
In conjunction with the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, the California Farm Bureau, and a coalition of local chefs, today’s proclamation is intended to market Sacramento as a farm-fresh culinary hub. According to the mayor’s office (and cited in today’s City Beat blog), the region is home to between 7,000 to 8,000 acres of “boutique farms” and touts more than 50 farmers’ markets.

Randall Selland of Ella Dining Room+Bar and Selland’s Market & Café helped further illustrate that connection to local agriculture—literally.

“Ready, Set, Kids…Cookoff” This Sunday at Oak Park

October 19, 2012 by SacFoodies

A unique foodie event is hitting Sacramento this Sunday, October 21 from 2-5 p.m. in Oak Park (3rd Ave. between 34th St. and Broadway). The inaugural “Ready, Set, Kids…Cookoff” is a competition pairing local student teams with renowned Sacramento chefs Noah Zonca of The Kitchen, John Bays of Red Rabbit and Patrick Mulvaney of Mulvaney’s B&L. Each of the student-chef teams will prepare meals for local celebrity judges.
The students participating have been involved in nutrition and entrepreneurship education at Hiram Johnson High School, Will C. Wood Middle School and Oak Ridge Elementary through the Fresh Producers program. The kids will be using their knowledge of nutrition to prepare selections for the judges using locally grown produce and products.
Although there won’t be enough of these select meals to go around, there will plenty of food trucks and other vendors to supply those in attendance with healthy food options and entertainment.
This is a free event for the public, so head on out and support area youth and this great cause.
Ready, Set, Go!
