Making Memories in Tahoe

August 4, 2014 by SacFoodies

Tahoe Treats KB

My family loves Tahoe summers. You can escape the Sacramento triple-digit days and soak in the cool mountain air while dining by the lake or taking in a few holes of miniature golf. So when a very significant birthday of mine was on the horizon, I knew a long week in Tahoe was exactly where I wanted to be on my special day.
While there are many amazing restaurants in Tahoe perfect for a special occasion, I have three kids under 5, so going out for a fancy meal isn’t always an option. Thankfully my thoughtful husband took matters into his own hands, and hired a chef to cook me the ultimate birthday dinner at the house we had rented in Tahoe City. Chef Derek Hagglof of Real Tahoe Food created a custom menu that was incredible starting with nibbles on the patio with a glass of Champagne and heaping spoonfuls of Burrata atop crisp grilled bread with homemade tomato jam. Pure birthday bliss! Chef Derek even enlisted the help of my very curious 4-year-old in the preparation of my birthday cake, which warmed both my heart and my belly.
Being able to celebrate my big day with friends and family in the comfort of home (with “Toy Story” quietly playing in the background) made this a birthday I will never forget.

 Kim’s Birthday Menu
Burrata with Grilled Sourdough, Tomato Jam, Roasted Garlic, Oven Dried Grapes, Honeycomb
Crab Fritters with Tarragon Aioli
Roasted White Corn Soup with Caramelized Shallots
Maple Pork Belly Risotto with Chive Oil
Braised Short Rib with Cauliflower Mash, Grilled Asparagus and Buttermilk Onion Rings
Molten Bittersweet Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream and Espresso Ganache

A Day in the Life of a SacFoodie: Tasty Adventures in San Antonio

As a SacFoodie I have the opportunity to travel to many delicious cities across the country and San Antonio, Texas is my most recent stop.
I had the pleasure of attending a conference at the beautiful Culinary Institute of America campus in San Antonio on behalf of a client and got the chance to take in some of the city while I was there.

As home to a Culinary Institute of America campus, San Antonio is a foodie’s paradise with many great restaurants serving innovative cuisine. I uncovered one of these gems my first evening in the city; a restaurant called CURED that specializes in housemade charcuterie, mustards and preserved goods such as their uniquely delicious pickled strawberries. I definitely recommend a stop at CURED if you’re in town.
San Antonio is sometimes known as the “Venice of the U.S.,” and with one walk down its famed River Walk you’ll understand why. The River Walk definitely resembles the canals of Venice, complete with a gondolier and arched bridges. The River Walk meanders through the city center and is studded with restaurants, bars and shops. On a balmy May evening, a delicious dinner, a cold glass of Prosecco and a stroll along the river was a perfect way to cap off my adventures in San Antonio.

Oh, but you can’t leave San Antonio without a cheesy photo in front of the Alamo, so of course, I did that too!

Smells like Sweet Summertime on Capitol Mall

May 16, 2014 by SacFoodies

Farmers Collage_text

There are few things I look forward to more than the Thursday Farmers Market on Capitol Mall. Every Thursday, now through September, Capitol Mall employees come out from behind their desks and cubicle walls, and flood the streets in search of food truck eats and feel-good, California-grown goodies—flowers and produce! With all of the action happening directly outside of our office, Thursdays look a lot like Christmas morning for the Sacfoodies crew.

The market might be running through September, but trust me it’ll be coming to a close before you know it! So, use it as an excuse to step outside and enjoy the heart of Sacramento on 6th Capitol Mall, Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Review: Sac Beer & Chili Festival

April 21, 2014 by SacFoodies

This past Saturday, I got to check out the Sacramento Beer & Chili Festival in Fremont Park. You can read more about this event on SacFoodies here.
After a whirlwind hour or two of beer and chili tasting, my favorites from the day were:

  • Chili – Industry category: the spicy hot chili from Blackbird
  • Chili – Individual category: the pork green chili from Piglets
  • Beer: for me, nothing beats the first taste of Hell or High Watermelon from 21st Amendment Brewery every summer!

It looked like everyone was having a blast at this event on Saturday. If you missed it this year, there is always 2015!
