I’ve done a lot of traveling. I mean, A LOT.
I spent my junior year at Chico State studying abroad in southern France, and during my 10 months across the pond, I planed, trained and bussed to the tune of 13 countries and 17 cities.
My traveling companion was my best friend and fellow foodie, who always had a more adventurous palate than I. She made me try snails in France, pizza with anchovies in Italy and pub food in England. We did a lot of eating.
The one thing we could not find, try as we might, was a decent Mexican place. Europe has a fabulous amount of decadent cuisine, but one thing we do more than right here on the West Coast are enchiladas, burritos and tamales.
Maybe it’s because we’ve been so spoiled here with the sheer authenticity of the chile verde and the cheesy goodness that is a well-made enchilada, but try as we might, there was no place to be found as good as Sacramento’s own, Tres Hermanas.
Located at 25th and K in midtown, Tres Hermanas has a full menu of mouthwatering plates that come complete with a pre-dinner salad. I wasn’t sold on the whole “salad before a Mexican meal” thing until I was encouraged by my dinner date to try the cilantro dressing.
Boy was I glad I did. Absolutely fabulous. I dream of this creamy green dressing.
I chose the cheesy enchiladas for my main course (which I always do) with the red sauce and devoured it, quite literally, whole.
I barely ever finish an entire plate of Mexican food, but there was simply no stopping once the combined efforts of the tortilla, warm, melty cheddar cheese and salsa won me over.
Another “must-devour” Tres Hermanas favorite of fellow Sac Foodie Jon Schuller is the Carnitas Chimichanga. When asked what he loves about it, Jon matter-of-factly answered “because the condiments on top make the colors of the Mexican flag: green guacamole, white sour cream and red salsa.”
How can you go wrong with logic like that?
Other Sac Foodie favorites include the fish tacos, tamales and Tosta de Agucate.
So, what are you waiting for? Vamos!

I couldn’t agree more! I’m a huge fan of Tres Hermanas–love their green sauce and their mole. And the shrimp diablo–spicy goodness.
If you like authentic Mexican/Southwest cuisine, you should also try Nopalitos in East Sac. Ask the staff for their recommendations and you won’t be sorry! 🙂

Agreed, their green sauce is fabulous! As is their guac…I guess all things green are worth it there. Thanks for the suggestion!

this place is so over rated. I’ve been here several times and never been served anything exceptional but have had mediocre food delivered on more than one occasion. most recently at a sunday brunch visit I ordered a breakfast omelet that looked like it was dropped and scrapped up and plated. the cheese hadn’t even melted. the server was inept as the owner had to come on the patio to scold her to refill water glasses. I’ll never return and refuse to attend any event my midtown friends suggest to hold at that location, maybe it’s better at east sac, dunno never been there.
