Local Events for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day

December 29, 2009 by SacFoodies

Lining up the perfect New Year’s plan can be a little stressful.  Here are some ideas for fun ways to ring in 2010, Sacramento style:
The Largest Party of 2010 – Ring in the New Year at Social nightclub and Cosmopolitan Cabaret.  Cosmo Cabaret will feature a live performance by The Spazmatics. Social Nightclub will feature Pat Allen, a 15 year veteran DJ of the Bay Area.  $50 will buy you access to both nightclubs and upgrading to the $99 price adds on a three-course dinner downstairs at Cosmo Cafe in addition to access to both clubs.  Call (916) 443-9004 or email [email protected] for more information.

The annual New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular – End the year with a bang in Old Sacramento on December 31 with this free event.  Two dazzling fireworks shows will light the night sky along the waterfront at 9 p.m. and at midnight.  The event features a full schedule of activities including live music, vendors, street entertainment and more.  Visit http://discovergold.org/nye/ for more information.
New Year’s Eve Gala – Sacramento’s premier NYE Gala will be held at the elegant Masonic Temple located in downtown Sacramento.  The $59 per person reservation fee includes open bar access until midnight, discounts at the Hyatt, shuttle service, live jazz and a DJ.  Make reservations here or call Grady at (916) 443-8741 for more information.
Hornblower – Hop on the Hornblower yacht for a memorable New Year’s Eve celebration with front row seats to the 9 p.m. fireworks show over the Tower Bridge.  Enjoy a buffet dinner, an open standard cocktail bar including after dinner liqueurs and house champagne, party favors, pre-boarding photograph and dancing – all for $159.  Boarding begins at 6:15 p.m. and the cruise leaves at 6:45 p.m. from L Street Dock @ 1206 Front St.  Visit the Hornblower Web site for more information.

New Years Eve Brewery Bash at Brew It Up! – Experience the Brew It Up! New Years Eve menu including $30 four-course fixed price specials available from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.  Reservations are recommended and can be made online here.  Stick around after dinner to ring in the new year with a performance by The Dane Drewis Band.  VIP booths, tables and private room packages are available for prices ranging from $60 to $300.  Visit Brew It Up!’s Web site or call (916) 441-3000 for more information.
Mix Downtown – Mix Downtown’s New Years Eve celebration is also a celebration of the Sacramento hot spot’s first birthday!  For a $50 cover, enjoy a night full of balloons, confetti, party favors, great music, food and drinks.  The night will be hosted by 100.5 The Zone with music selections by DJ Jus James.  Visit Mix Downtown’s Web site or call (916) 442-8899 for more information.  Buy your tickets here.
New Years at Sweetwater – Sweetwater will be featuring a DJ, a champagne toast at midnight and 2 for 1 drink specials at a surprise hour during the night.  Avoid paying the $15 cover by starting your night off with their special New Years dinner menu.  Visit Sweetwater’s Web site or call (916) 731-8857 for more information.

Hot Italian – Hot Italian will be there for you on New Year’s Day to help speed up your recovery after a night on the town!  They’ll be offering their brunch menu one day early (it’s typically available Saturday and Sundays 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.).  Stop by Friday morning to refuel with eggs and carbs – Hot Italian style.  Dine in, pick-up and delivery will all be available.
Capitol Garage – Celebrate New Year’s Day at Capitol Garage with endless mimosas from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. for just $4.95. Visit http://www.capitolgarage.com/CG_Reservations.shtml to make online reservations.

These are a few of our Favorite Things

December 24, 2009 by SacFoodies

Sitting by the fire with a glass of wine,
pumpkin spice lattes so warm and divine
Gingerbread Houses and Starbucks red cups,
holiday baking and sweaters on pups
Dryers Peppermint ice cream and the cookie swap,
decorating the tree with a big star on top
Window shopping at the French Hen a thing to remember,
Holiday Home Tour in east Sac every December
Fresh pine wreaths, spiced cider and crisp air,
the smells of the holiday season everywhere
Something, something something … and bacon in green beans,
these are a few of our favorite things!

A New Restaurant on Capitol Mall: UPDATE

December 23, 2009 by SacFoodies

We have some exciting new details about the new restaurant coming to 555 Capitol Mall that we first reported last week. According to a source that commented on our post, here are the latest details about House Kitchen & Bar:
Opening: January 5, 2010 (That’s in less than 2 weeks!)
Serving: “Reasonably priced fine comfort foods.” (We’re hoping for some mac & cheese)
Happy Hour: Apparently, a happy hour with extended hours is in the works. (Cheers to that!)
We’ve also heard that House will take the place of the La Bou lunch “to go” cart that is currently in the building lobby at 555 Capitol Mall. With the closure of La Bou’s Downtown Plaza location earlier this year, as of December 25, the nearest downtown La Bou will be at 11th and L Street.
We’re looking forward to trying out House when it opens – we’ll keep you posted!

Restaurant Gift Card Giveaway (Practically)

December 21, 2009 by SacFoodies

This past weekend was the weekend to finish up (or start!) the often-dreaded holiday gift shopping.  As wonderful as it is to put a smile on the face of friends and family, it’s easy to start feeling those empty-wallet-woes as you near the end of your list.
We feel your pain, which is why we were so excited to find out about a deal that’s almost too good to be true.  From now until Friday, December 25th, Restaurant.com is offering 80 percent off gift cards.  Translation: Buy a $25 restaurant gift card for only $2!  The Web site has a long list of Sacramento area restaurants like Brew It Up!, Vallejo’s Mexican Restaurant, Lounge ON20 and Aura.  All you have to do is enter the discount code “SANTA” at checkout.
For $2, you might as well buy one for that last person on your list, use one to reward yourself for finishing your holiday shopping, and get a few extras to save for rainy days!

A New Restaurant on Capitol Mall

December 17, 2009 by SacFoodies

Word on the street (and by street, I of course mean Capitol Mall) is that a new restaurant is finally poised to move in to the old 55 Degrees space at 555 Capitol Mall. Walking by today I snapped a couple photos of the new bright orange logo displayed in the window that reads, “House Kitchen & Bar.” One can only speculate the various delights that could fit into the title of “Kitchen & Bar,” so I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.

We’ll see if we can dish up some more details, but we’re definitely excited about a new restaurant moving into the area. Fingers crossed that they’ll have some great lunch specials and happy hour deals!
