A Tribute to Sushi
The Sac Foodies heart sushi. Whether you want to wind down at the end of a long day, or get a night of celebration started, sushi is often a go-to cuisine. Our favorite local sushi spots are a very common topic of conversation around here.
We’ve managed to accumulate an overload of sushi reviews and pictures over the past few months, which can only lead to one thing: A Tribute to Sushi! So sit back, enjoy the beautiful pictures, and learn about all of our favorite sushi spots around town!
Jessica Smith – My first-ever restaurant experience in Sacramento was at Sapporo during the first week that they opened. I was impressed with the creativity of their rolls and have been delighted to see them supporting events locally…such as the Sactown Magazine premiere party for “The September Issue.”
Jenna Kirkwood – I’m a HUGE fan of spicy/saucy rolls and the “Train Wreck” at Mikuni has got to be my favorite. I do also love Nishiki for all-around delicious rolls and have very fond memories of mid-day sushi-comas after all-you-can-eat sushi lunches at Sushi Nobu in Davis.
Liz Conant – I recently checked out Hashi, a fairly new sister restaurant to Nishiki. Located at 21st and L Street, they have some great specials including $1 handrolls on Monday, $1 nigiri on Tuesday and ½ off a selection of special rolls on Wednesday. We went on a Wednesday and ordered edamame, a couple pieces of tuna nigiri and a selection of the special handrolls. I especially liked the Lion King and Dragon rolls – next time I think I’ll go on a Monday for the $1 hand rolls! If you like Nishiki, you’ll probably like Hashi too.
Christine Schunk – My favorite sushi place is Zen Toro, in downtown Davis. I found the perfect roll here, and often try to recreate it at other sushi restaurants but of course the original is always best. The Citrus Breeze roll consists of tempura shrimp, cucumber, cream cheese and avocado topped with fresh salmon and lemon slices. Deliciousness on a plate!
Kim Bedwell – I’m a Nishiki fan. Specifically, I enjoy the Capitol Roll and the McHenry Roll. Also, you can’t pass up the bacon-wrapped scallops in the thick teriyaki sauce. Yum!
Have a favorite sushi restaurant we didn’t mention? Let us know, we’d love to try it out!
Tightwad Tuesday: Tokyo Fro's Happy Hour
I heart sushi. And when I find a good sushi place, I like to shout it from the rooftops. KRU! MIKUNI! I bet they can hear me all the way in Davis…where I love ZEN TORO! (It’s common knowledge that when you type in all caps it’s yelling, right?)
So what’s the latest sushi spot to which I’ve been referring friends? TOKYO FRO’S! Haven’t heard of it? Well you should check it out, and here’s why: Every weeknight, Tokyo Fro’s offers diners half off sushi rolls and cocktails! And that’s not all – the midtown location, which is situated inside Dream night club on 15th Street, has this happy hour offer from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m., so even workaholics can join the fun! Tokyo Fro’s also has a location in Fair Oaks, which boasts happy hour Monday through Saturday from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m.
Now it’s confession time. Since discovering Tokyo Fro’s happy hour, I have been three times in three weeks. I’ve loved everything I’ve tried, but have to gush about the Fro So Def roll – it’s to-die-for.
According to a fellow PR pro, @Lesley3fold, the asparagus roll is also amazing. If you’ve been to Tokyo Fro’s, please let us know what your favorite menu item is by leaving a comment below!
SushiMasters 2008
What do you get when you take six California sushi chefs and have them battle it out in a 45-minute winner-takes-all sushi brawl?
SushiMasters!
The California Rice Commission held its fourth annual SushiMaster competition last night in Sacramento and it was a battle between chefs from Fresno, Hollywood, San Diego, San Francisco and Sacramento’s own Billy Ngo, chef/owner of Kru. A few months back, a few SacFoodies raved about Kru’s sushi (apparently the Ziggy roll reigns supreme according to SacFoodie palates), so we were definitely rooting on our hometown chef. However, his victory will come another day because this year’s SushiMaster is Chef Tomaharu Nakamura of Sanraku Four Seasons in San Francisco. I lived in San Francisco for five years, and for two of those years, walked by Sanraku Four Seasons every day, and never once went in. Foolish, foolish me.
So Sacramentans, what’s your favorite sushi joint in the Capitol city? I’d have to say mine is Nishiki. The Capitol and McHenry rolls are scrumptious!
Sushi Show Down (try to say that ten times fast!)
Our friends at the California Rice Commission will again bring the SushiMasters Finals to Sacramento. The June 10 event should prove to be an appetizing treat for both the eyes and taste buds. Representing the Sacramento area in the sushi-making show down will be none other than Billy Ngo of Kru restaurant, a Sacfoodies sushi favorite.
The 2008 SushiMasters Finals are open to the public and will also feature sushi and sake tasting (yum!), so don’t miss out!
