Now that we’ve settled into September (raise your hand if you’ve already had a pumpkin spice latte . . .), we want to shine a spotlight on one of our favorite Sacramento institutions – Food Literacy Center. This month is Food Literacy Month, and we’re so excited to lend our support to our favorite foodie nonprofit.
Six years ago, Food Literacy Center worked with the California legislature to officially declare September as Food Literacy Month to raise awareness about the need for cooking and nutrition education for kids. Food Literacy Center brings essential food and nutrition programming to low-income elementary schools, teaching kids about how (any why) to love your veggies.
This September, help us support Food Literacy Center and their foodie mission by donating to our fundraising team, Team Carrot! The work Food Literacy Center does directly benefits our community and helps America’s Farm-to-Fork Capitol walk the walk and talk the talk. After all, what’s a foodie city without food literacy?

The Village Feast 2018
September in Sacramento is one of our favorite times of the year, and it’s not just because the weather is FINALLY cooling down . . . it’s because it’s Farm to Fork Month! We’re preparing (emotionally, mentally, physically) for a month of non-stop foodie fun and we can’t wait to see what Farm to Fork Month has in store for us.
One of the events we’re most excited for is the upcoming The Village Feast, a communal meal held outside at Central Park in Downtown Davis from 1:00pm – 4:00pm, September 29. The Village Feast will bring up to 350 people together for a meal highlighting local farmers and the bounty of the Sacramento region.
How does it work? You bring your own table settings (picnic baskets, plates, silverware, glasses and napkins) and sit down for a family-style meal of passed platters and local wines. This year’s menu includes heirloom tomatoes, grilled leg of lamb, local vegetables and a pear galette. For a full menu and wine list, take a look here!
This seasonal soiree benefits the Sacramento chapter of Les Dames d’Escoffier and Davis Farm to School, two charitable organizations who work in support of education in food and agriculture. The Dames provide scholarships to women pursuing careers in food, wine and agriculture, and Davis Farm to School provides garden grants, field trips and support for local fresh food in schools.
At The Village Feast you get a fantastic local meal in a beautiful place and it goes towards a great cause. Is there a better way to celebrate Farm to Fork Month?

2018 St. Patrick's Day Roundup

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner, March 17th to be exact, and thankfully Sacramento has plenty of activities for everyone to enjoy. Do you have a favorite annual event that didn’t make it onto the list? Leave us a note (and an invite) in the comments!
Cafeteria 15L
Local dining hotspot Cafeteria 15L is adding classic Irish dishes to their brunch menu on St. Paddy’s Day only! If you follow SacFoodies on Instagram you’ll know that we are quite partial to Sunday brunch at 15L, (Bacon Jam Bennie and bottomless mimosas, yes please!) but the corn beef hash special sounds so good I might be tempted to switch it up. Hey, this does only happen once a year!
Old Sacramento Parade
This annual parade unites hundreds of colorful marchers, highland dancers, bagpipers and drum bands, and re-enactors in traditional Irish and Celtic outfits for a day of entertainment you won’t want to miss. Events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the parade starting at 1:00 p.m. Arrive early to get a front row seat to the action.
de Vere’s Irish Pub
For Irish food you can find year-round, head to de Vere’s Irish Pub. They have traditional, yet elevated, dishes such as Bangers and Mash and Irish Stew. Before celebrating the holiday on Saturday, head to de Vere’s on Monday the 12th for their annual St. Baldrick’s Rock the Bald event to raise money for St Baldricks foundation.
Fox & Goose
Fox and Goose is bringing Irish music to town with performances from bagpipers, Irish folk singers, The Pikeys, and The Spicy McCormicks. Plus, Irish beer is on tap all night and delicious Irish bites are served until 10:00 p.m. All ages welcome until 10:00 p.m., and 21+ from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m.
Malt and Mash
Downtown restaurant and bar Malt and Mash is hosting their second annual St. Pat’s Block Party. They will be featuring an outdoor beer garden, four bars and live music. Want a side of bagpipers with your Guinness? Malt and Mash will make that happen. Open from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.
Streets Pub and Grub
Streets Pub and Grub will be hosting their annual St. Patrick’s Day party featuring live entertainment, Irish beer, and peanut butter car bombs. Not to mention Irish Tacos (which I think I definitely need to try). Wear green and get ready to celebrate with the self-proclaimed “OG’s of St Paddy’s Day.”
Pizza Rock
Pizza Rock on K Street is serving their specialty Sausage and Stout pizza in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. With dough made with honey malted stout beer and toppings including beer sausage, carmelized onions, fontina cheese, scallions, beer salt and a sweet Guiness reduction, ths is the perfect dish to celebrate the holiday. Pizza Rock only make 23 of these pizzas a day, so get yours before it’s gone!
Wherever you go on St. Patrick’s Day remember to celebrate responsibly and treat-yo-self to some corn beef and cabbage, I know we will!

Dine Downtown 2018
Sacramentans, rejoice! Dine Downtown 2018 is officially our favorite way to kick off this rainy New Year. From January 12-21st, 32 del-oi-cious Sacramento restaurants are offering three-course meals for $35 in honor of Dine Downtown 2018. For ten days, your favorite restaurants will feature a special Dine Downtown menu, with one dollar from every meal purchased benefiting local social services and Sacramento’s Food Literacy Center.
As foodie fiends, we love the opportunity to try out specially curated menus because it gives chefs the chance to show off what they’re proud of, and we get to try something new. Earlier this week, we were invited to preview the Dine Downtown menus from Ten22, La Cosecha and Iron Horse Tavern.To no one’s surprise, everything we tried was inventive and tasty, with unexpected flavors and new takes on old classics that caught our attention in a big way!
