Tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo and Sacramento knows how to celebrate!  Here are just a few of the festivities going on around town tomorrow. Thanks to Sac365.com for inspiring this post (if you’re not signed up for their newsletter, you can do so here).

Zocalo: Zocalo is having a three day Cinco de Mayo celebration and today is two for $20 Tuesday! You and a dining partner can enjoy one appetizer, two entrees and one dessert for just $20. Saving all your celebrating for May 5th? Zolcalo will have a huge Cinco de Mayo party expanding to the sidewalk where you can enjoy $2 tacos. For more information call (916) 441-0303.
Centro Cocina: Cento Cocina is having one of Sacramento’s biggest Cinco de Mayo celebrations! From 9 a.m.-2 a.m., on May 5th, 28th street, along with Centro’s parking lots, will shut down for this massive gathering. There will be an outside food court selling tacos and burritos, and inside you can enjoy any item off their regular like enchiladas, tamales or chalupas. There will also be live music, dancing, and margaritas! Tickets are $20. For more information call (916) 442-2552.
De Vere’s Irish Pub: Although it may seem unusual to celebrate Cinco de Mayo at an Irish pub, on May 5th De Vere’s will show their customers they like to celebrate any holiday. From 5p.m.-1 a.m., De Vere’s will host their O’Drinko de Mayo party where they will sell $2 Coronas, $4 tequila and margaritas, and $2 tacos- and there’s no cover! Festa di Vino Ticket Giveaway!

Mark your calendars-May 1st is the Point West Rotary Club’s 8th Annual Festa di Vino! A few SacFoodies attended this event last year and had a great time sampling local food and wine and even took a quick ride on the Aerospace museum’s flight simulator. 
Festa di Vino will take place at the Aerospace Museum of California from 7-10 p.m. and will feature tastings from more than 20 wineries including Rail Bridge Cellars, Pedroncelli and Latcham Vineyards. Restaurants and sweet treats such as PF Chang’s, 33rd Street Bistro and Cupcake Craving will also be on hand to tempt your taste buds.
Not only will you sample great wine and food, a portion of the event’s proceeds will benefit Women’s Empowerment, a program that helps Sacramento’s homeless women find homes and jobs so they can support their families. The Point West Rotary Club of Sacramento has contributed over $1 million to area charities in their 25 years of service.

Sacramento Celebrity Chef Challenge

If you are a Food Network fanatic and enjoy watching food competitions, then we have the event for you! The Celebrity Chef Challenge is coming to the California Automobile Museum on April 30th from 5:30-9:30 p.m.

A live audience will watch six local chefs battle for 45 minutes to turn five secret ingredients into three tasty dishes.  Chef Dominique Crenn, recently featured as a celebrity chef on “The Next Iron Chef,” Bryan May, from News 10, and a surprise celebrity will be judging the competition!

Tickets are $50 in advance ($60 at the door) and include admission, a tour of the automotives housed by the California Automobile Museum, viewing of the challenge, and samplings of beer, wine and food from over 70 regional vendors including: Anderson Valley Brewing Company, Bogle Winery, Piatti Ristorante & Bar, and Sweetwater Restaurant.
To top it all off, 100% of the proceeds will benefit InAlliance, a nonprofit that provides supported employment, work and life skills training to people with developmental disabilities throughout the Greater Sacramento area. Picnic Day 2010

This past weekend was my first time attending Picnic Day at UC Davis and let’s just say, there was definitely no need for me to pack a picnic basket! UC Davis had enough food booths and vendors to help anyone create their perfect Picnic Day food pairings. Here are just a few of the food options that were out there:

The UC Davis Shah’s Halal Food Cart was a very popular Picnic Day food destination. They were serving up tasty dishes like chicken or lamb over rice for $6.75 and chicken or lamb gyros for $5.75. Anyone looking for something to satisfy their sweet tooth could turn to the Fresh Strawberry Crepe Day at La Crepe. La Crepe is located in the Silo and serves over 50 specialty crepes ranging from dessert crepes and vegetarian crepes to Chicken Florentine crepes.

And of course, there were enough corn dogs, root beer floats, and cotton candy for all to enjoy!
The abundant food choices and the beautiful weather made for a great first-time Picnic Day experience.
