We’re always excited about Tightwad Tuesdays but today we’re extra excited because this week it benefits a great cause.
This Wednesday, Maria Shriver and the California Restaurant Association (CRA) will be hosting the WE Are Family Day 2009 celebration. This Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., 650 CRA member restaurants across the state will serve free meals to children with the purchase of an adult entrée, all in an effort to encourage families to simply spend some time eating a meal together.
Shriver and the CRA have teamed up for the past four years to bring Family Day events to cities throughout California. Their goal is to encourage families to spend more time doing activities that will strengthen relationships such as eating, playing and volunteering together.
Family Day is a national movement launched by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The center’s research shows that children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs.
Participating Sacramento restaurants include Boudin Bakery, Dos Coyotes Border Café, Round Table Pizza and Woody’s Grill and Bar.
For more information about Family Day and a list of participating restaurants, visit www.WEAreFamily.ca.gov.
Foodie Fun this Friday: Fairytale Town After Hours (and a Giveaway!)
Don’t have plans for Friday night yet? Join us at Fairytale Town for the 17th Annual “After Hours” event – a food and wine gala and auction benefiting the Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center. The event also boasts a nice beverage list to help you wash down the chow, including Bogle Vineyards, Carvahlo Family Wines, Sacramento Brewing Company and De Vere’s Irish Pub, to name just a few.
The Event Committee Chair Allison was kind enough to offer us four tickets to give away to our readers. To enter, please leave a comment below and we will choose two winners at random on Thursday at Noon to each receive a pair of tickets.
A few of us SacFoodies will also be volunteering at the event, so we hope to see you there!

Tightwad Tuesday: 31 Cent Scoop Night at Baskin-Robbins
The Delta Breeze may have blown away last week’s record-breaking high temperatures, but that doesn’t mean a return to more spring-like weather will be a reason for the Sac Foodies to miss out on the chance to have some Baskin-Robbins ice cream at a fraction of the regular price. Stop by any Baskin-Robbins store on Wednesday, April 29 from 5:00 – 10:00 p.m. and enjoy a 2.5-ounce scoop of ice cream or 3-ounce Soft Serve for just 31 cents. As part of the promotion, Baskin-Robbins will donate $100,000 to the National Volunteer Fire Council’s National Junior Firefighter Program, which engages youth and encourages them to become members of the emergency services. Be sure to arrive early, as we’ve been told the line for 31-cent ice cream tends to get long.
If one scoop isn’t enough for you, not to worry – Baskin-Robbins says you can get up to three at a time, and yes, you can get back in line for seconds. For more information on the 31 Cent Scoop Night, go to the Baskin-Robbins website or stay up to date with the latest breaking ice cream news by following them on Twitter.
If you can’t make Wednesday’s 31 Cent Scoop Night but are still on the hunt for some budget-minded ice cream, some Baskin-Robbins stores also offer scoops of ice cream for $1 on Tuesday nights from 6:00 p.m. to close. You might find one of us taking advantage of this deal at the downtown Davis or East Sacramento locations, but not all stores participate in this offer so it’s best to find your local store and call before venturing out.
