True, fellow Sac Foodie Liz Conant shone a Wordless Wednesday spotlight on this screaming deal back in February.
I’m here to reiterate the amazingness of it all.
Café Bernardo—that bastion of the midtown and Davis dining scenes—is a hotspot for breakfast and lunch and known for incorporating local ingredients into its inventive and approachable dishes. But do you ever consider it as a dinner option?
You should.
Especially with this weekly dining special, only available at the midtown location on Capitol Avenue. Monday through Thursday, from 5 p.m. to close, the original location is offering two starters, two mains and a carafe of wine for only $25!
And trust me. Unlike similar specials around town, Café Bernardo doesn’t skimp on portions.
Each Monday, the restaurant debuts its ever-changing Two for $25 specials on Facebook. The items range from menu staples like the to-die-for turkey burger with a large side of garlic fries, to the delicious achiote chicken salad with a side of fresh bread from the Paragary Bakery.
Depending on the dish, Café Bernardo also mixes up the drinks. While an appropriately paired carafe of wine is standard, the eatery has also offered pitchers of beer or ice-cold Coronas to wash down each flavorful plate.
Again: all for $25.
Here’s a look at my culinary sojourn this week.

Summer Sippers a Sweet Deal at the Grange Restaurant & Bar
I am reasonably new to the Sacramento area, but during my time living on the central coast I would travel here on business for various wine industry-related events. During these trips I was sometimes lucky enough to stay at the lovely Citizen Hotel, which is also home to the Grange Restaurant & Bar. Now that I am a permanent resident to the area I have regular access to the Grange and the many wonderful restaurants Sacramento has to offer.
For nostalgia reasons (and because the wine list is superb), I invited a few girlfriends to join me at the Grange for a glass of wine last Friday evening. When I asked about the specials, I was thrilled when the server informed me that every Friday for the entire summer the Grange is offering 50 percent off every bottle of wine on their list. So the glass-of-wine idea was thrown out the window and we, of course, ordered a bottle.
For a gal who works on Capitol Mall, I love the convenience of taking a stroll down to the Grange after a long work week, and the fact that this SacFoodies secret is available all summer is simply perfect.
Here’s the scoop:
- 50 percent off all bottles every Friday from 5:30 p.m. until close
- Offer valid for the summer (final date in August TBD)
- Valid for dining room service only
Recommended wine and food pairing: Trefethen, Dry Riesling from Napa Valley and the Ahi Tuna Tartare
I truly enjoyed this pairing because the floral qualities of the Riesling merry well with the tuna and jalapeño caviar while the wine’s acidity complements the creamy texture of the avocado.
A deal like this is perfect for those who have an adventurous palate! Don’t stop at the suggested pairing above as there are many options, including a few happy hour snacks that would go nicely with a handful of wines on the list. To really step out of your box, give the “esoteric” wines a try and maybe you will discover a new favorite varietal or blend.
This Weekend: Raley’s Grape Escape – Saturday, June 2
The summer months are here, friends, and that means it is time for festivals galore. This weekend brings a Sacramento region classic: the Raley’s Grape Escape.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of this spectacular event, which takes place this Saturday, June 2, from 4- 7 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Park. The Raley’s Grape Escape is open to those 21 and over, and more than 60 wineries from regional counties like Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin and Amador will feature 200 different wines. Yes, please!
In addition to sipping a variety of fabulous wines, the food options will be amazing. More than 40 area restaurants and breweries will be on hand to sample, including Red Rabbit, Ruhstaller, Pizza Rock, Mulvaney’s B&L and Restaurant Thir13en.
But the food and wine fun doesn’t stop there. The day will also feature a chef challenge consisting of three of Sacramento’s most praised chefs: Oliver Ridgeway of Grange Restaurant, David English of The Press Bistro & Bar and Carina Lampkin of the newly opened Blackbird Kitchen & Bar.
Head to Cesar Chavez Park this weekend, and check out why Sacramento is a premier destination for divine food and wine! Tickets are $35 at local Raley’s and Bel Air stores, $40 at RaleysGrapeEscape.com and $50 at the door.
