To celebrate the newly formed Handle District, RADIO 94.7 and Sacramento Magazine have teamed up to sponsor Yelp’s Too Hot to Handle Yelper Party on August 25 at the intersection of 18th St. and Capitol.
“What is the Handle District?” you may ask. In July 2011, the Handle District won city approval to form its own business assessment district, comprised of 28 restaurants and retail businesses in midtown. The Handle District is home to businesses between 17th and 19th streets, and L St. and Capitol.
Free food will be provided by restaurants such as Zocalo, Paesanos and Yogurtagogo; draft beer by Victoria, Model and Negra Modelo; wine options from Domino; and spirits such as Milagro Tequila, Stoli vodka and Sailor Jerry rum. Not to mention, Bassil Karmas will be giving out free massages, and Cuisine Noir Magazine will be there offering gourmet food advice.
Admission is free, and you must be 21 and over. To attend, just create an account on Yelp and RSVP by clicking “I’m in!” on the events page; however, this does not guarantee you entry. After you RSVP, you must wait for the official invitation, as Yelp is taking into account how often one uses and contributes to Yelp.
If you do not often contribute to Yelp, do not give up! I use Yelp for almost everything, but must admit that I am not the biggest contributor; however, I RSVP’d and got the official invitation about a week later. Free food, drinks, entertainment and massages on a beautiful summer day in Sacramento? Might as well throw your name in the hat.
What: Yelp’s Too Hot to Handle Yelper Party

SacFoodies Secret: Taqueria Maya’s, Sacramento
I live in Land Park, which means I have access to a bevy of Mexican food options on Broadway. Last year, Taqueria Maya’s took over a space which had previously been owned by a not-so-great Mexican restaurant, and I quickly learned that Maya’s has the hands-down best street tacos I’ve ever had outside of Mexico.
To top it off? They offer these tacos for just $1 each during Happy Hour, Monday-Thursday from 3-6 p.m. (Not to mention $2 draft beers during that same time.)
Los Jarritos (also on Broadway) may still be my No. 1 pick for a burrito, but the tacos (and the prices) at Maya’s simply cannot be beat.

A SacFoodie in Portland
A couple weeks ago, I found myself strolling the streets of Portland’s Pearl District with friends and admiring the range of food options, spanning from fancy fare to quirky holes in the wall.
Oregon is definitely known for its beer, so I wasn’t surprised to discover that the brewery that makes my favorite beer also has a restaurant (several, actually). Rogue Distillery & Public House is located in the heart of Portland’s Historic Brewing District. Besides a menu full of pub classics, they’ve got 38 beers on tap, including my favorite – Hazelnut Brown Nectar.
As luck would have it, the Portland area was experiencing a bit of a water safety issue at the time, so we weren’t able to order any water with our food. This allowed me to feel far less guilty when I ordered a few rounds of this not-on-the-menu gem – the Rogue Snickers (hey, I needed to wash down my dinner somehow, right?).
The Snickers was a mixture of my aforementioned favorite, Hazelnut Brown Nectar, and their Chocolate Stout. Wow. Simply wow! It really hit the spot with its rich, velvety flavor.
After dinner, we walked the beers off and headed to the popular Northwest staple – Voodoo Doughnut. As another SacFoodie mentioned on her trip to Voodoo, this must-see shop also serves as a wedding chapel. Yes, it’s one of those eccentric joints that make Portland so idiosyncratically wonderful. The doughnuts on display made us (and the estimated 50 people in line ahead of us) drool. Our wait was about 25 minutes, but it was so worth it.
I opted for the Old Dirty Bastard, which featured chocolate, Oreos and peanut butter. Apparently, the Bacon Maple Bar is one of their most popular, so I’m definitely going to try it the next time I visit.
If you’re ever in Portland, I seriously recommend stopping by Rogue Distillery (even if the city’s water is safe to drink) and Voodoo Doughnut. This SacFoodie was sad to leave!
