King of Feasts and a Giveaway!

Want to dine and sip with the kings of the animal kingdom? Then get ready for Sacramento Zoo’s King of Feasts. The 11th annual event will be Saturday, June 23, at the Sacramento Zoo in Land Park.
Taking place from 6-9 p.m., attendees will be immersed in local food and beverages while browsing the lovely landscape of the zoo. This year, the event has a luau theme, so get your Hawaiian print and sandals ready.  

Some local hot spots will feature delicious eats during the evening, including Red Rabbit Kitchen & Bar, Kru and Mulvaney’s B&L. Even local food trucks from Heavenly Dog Hot Dogs and Willie’s Burgers will be on hand to serve up some hot eats.
Plenty of local beverages will be available to quench even the thirstiest attendees; some breweries that might ring a bell are Lost Coast, Pyramid Alehouse and Hoppy Brewing Company. For the wine lover, enjoy vino courtesy of Carvalho Family Winery, Twisted Rivers Wine, Three Wine Company and Clarksburg Wine Co.   

The fun and unique fundraiser will also feature silent auctions, ukulele players and Polynesian dancers.

Slow Food Sacramento’s 4th Annual Urban Ag Fest

Food events are great and even better when they benefit a good cause. This just happens to be the case with the upcoming 4th Annual Urban Ag Fest put on by Slow Food Sacramento, this Saturday, June 9 at Rosemont High School.
The Urban Ag Fest is a fundraiser to bring edible schoolyard projects and nutritional education to schools throughout the Sacramento region. The event will specifically benefit O.W. Erlewine Elementary School’s ecology and garden center and Rosemont High School’s Green Academy.
The night will kick off with the Showcase Reception at 4 p.m., with local schools sharing their schoolyard garden projects and preparing fresh and nutritious salad samples from their crops.
Following the reception is the dinner, which will feature a superb menu created by Matt and Yvette Woolston of the Supper Club and starts at 6 p.m. Each dish is prepared slow-food style and will include many lunchroom classics, with a gourmet twist. The burgers come in the form of sliders made with beef from a local ranch, the mac and cheese is organic and gluten free and the fish sticks are grilled peppercorn-crusted sterling sturgeon. This Weekend: Raley’s Grape Escape – Saturday, June 2

The summer months are here, friends, and that means it is time for festivals galore. This weekend brings a Sacramento region classic: the Raley’s Grape Escape.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of this spectacular event, which takes place this Saturday, June 2, from 4- 7 p.m. at Cesar Chavez Park. The Raley’s Grape Escape is open to those 21 and over, and more than 60 wineries from regional counties like Sacramento, Yolo, San Joaquin and Amador will feature 200 different wines. Yes, please!
In addition to sipping a variety of fabulous wines, the food options will be amazing. More than 40 area restaurants and breweries will be on hand to sample, including Red Rabbit, Ruhstaller, Pizza Rock, Mulvaney’s B&L and Restaurant Thir13en.
But the food and wine fun doesn’t stop there. The day will also feature a chef challenge consisting of  three of Sacramento’s most praised chefs: Oliver Ridgeway of Grange Restaurant, David English of The Press Bistro & Bar and Carina Lampkin of the newly opened Blackbird Kitchen & Bar.

Sacramento Wine and Dine Week

It’s no secret that the Capital City is home to a robust array of delicious dining options and the upcoming Sacramento Wine & Dine Week is an excellent opportunity to enjoy an old favorite or try a new spot you’ve been dying to get to. The premise is this: from May 30-June 10 a variety of area restaurants will be participating in this event in which diners can indulge in a three-to-four course meal at a fraction of the cost. And did I mention the meals are paired with samples of regional wines? Sign me up!
Think of it as a tour du jour of hot spots from downtown to midtown and throughout the greater Sacramento area. Participating restaurants include: Biba, The Porch, Firehouse, Michelangelo’s, Frank Fat’s, Paragary’s Bar and Oven, Hawk’s Restaurant, The Press Bistro and Ten 22.

Davis Farmers Market, Among the Nation’s Best

When the weather warms up and summer is in full bloom, one of the most anticipated activities for many is visiting local farmers markets. There is no better place to pick up delicious fruits, veggies, flowers and often times a variety of other specialty products from local vendors.

I’d have to say the most robust farmers market I ever visited was a Saturday afternoon market in New York’s Greenwich Village. Luckily for us in the Sacramento region, there is no need to travel far and wide to find a fun farmers market. In fact, the immensely popular market held year-round in Davis was named one of the top 10 in the nation by USA Today. The highly anticipated “Picnic in the Park” begins annually at the end of March and runs through October. This weekly Wednesday evening event was hailed for its social and family friendly aspect, as well its abundance of fresh goods.
