Farm to Office: May 5th

May 5, 2016 by SacFoodies

by Brandon Smith
It’s officially that time of year! The Downtown Farmers’ Market season is upon us. Thursday, May 5th kicked off the Capitol Mall farmers’ market and we were not going to let the dark skies and 40 percent chance of precipitation keep us from the food.
Here’s a look at what the SacFoodies opted for on our first day back at the market:

The Capitol Mall farmers’ market takes place every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., May through September.
Check back next Thursday for more of our favorite “Farm to Office” finds.

Meet Sacramento’s “Reverse Food Truck,” Gathering Healthy Food Donations to Combat Hunger

June 1, 2015 by SacFoodies

Reverse Food Truck

By Peter Bittner
Most food trucks serve mouth-watering tacos, burgers, or other delicious fare to customers. One local non-profit is turning that concept on its head. The Reverse Food Truck (Link to website: http://sacrft.com/), run by Sacramento locals Richard and Zoey Goore, collects donations of fresh produce, healthy non-perishable items, and monetary support to aid local food banks, schools, and other organizations. Aiming to help alleviate hunger and malnutrition in the Sacramento region and educate the public about food insecurity, particularly among children, the Reverse Food Truck (link to Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SacRFT)
Currently the Reverse Food Truck collaborates with the Sacramento Hunger Coalition, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op, and the Jewish Federation of the West, among others. Hunger, especially in children, has long been a concern of the couple; children living in poverty are more likely to suffer from chronic illnesses like diabetes, more likely to need to be hospitalized for their illnesses, and less likely to finish high school. In Sacramento County, 1 in 5 people live in poverty and 1 in 4 people living in poverty are children.
“Sacramento is an amazing city, with so many community leaders and residents dedicated to making it a better place for all who live here. We are confident that this community will step up and help us put hunger in the rearview,” the Goores affirm in their pamphlets.
You can help make a difference by keeping an eye out for the Reverse Food Truck at farmers’ markets, food truck festivals, and other events in the Greater Sacramento Region, and, of course, donating fresh kale or your favorite veggies to help those in need!

Smells like Sweet Summertime on Capitol Mall

May 16, 2014 by SacFoodies

There are few things I look forward to more than the Thursday Farmers Market on Capitol Mall. Every Thursday, now through September, Capitol Mall employees come out from behind their desks and cubicle walls, and flood the streets in search of food truck eats and feel-good, California-grown goodies—flowers and produce! With all of the action happening directly outside of our office, Thursdays look a lot like Christmas morning for the Sacfoodies crew.

The market might be running through September, but trust me it’ll be coming to a close before you know it! So, use it as an excuse to step outside and enjoy the heart of Sacramento on 6th Capitol Mall, Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

Did you know there are 12 farmer’s markets in the Sacramento area per week? While I wasn’t able to make it to all 12 last week, I was able to stop by an old favorite.
The
farmer’s market at 8th and W is always bustling; with locals in search of creating their own farm to fork experience, and vendors eager to provide it.  The market offers an array of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other goods. Everything in sight is not only fresh, it’s beautiful. When shopping, one of the biggest challenges I face is knowing what’s in season and how to pick it out. If it weren’t for YouTube, I couldn’t even begin to tell you what to look for in the “perfect pineapple.” Lucky for me (and for you), the farmers and vendors at the market can tell you first hand what’s best this time of year, what to avoid and how to select an item. Many of them will even hand pick items for you!

In addition to fruits and vegetables, the market offers eggs and milk from nearby farms, and even flowers from locals like Frank!

Garlic doesn’t come much cheaper, and the flowers don’t get much fresher.

Dried arrangements are perfect for sprucing up your outdoor kitchen and add flavor to any bottle of olive oil.

Leaving empty handed is almost impossible, and the experience is unforgettable. With 12 per week in our own backyard, finding a farmer’s market this summer is easier than ever! For a complete list, visit http://www.california-grown.com/Market-times.html.
