The SacFoodies love anything that makes finding the best food in town easier. When we were notified of some awesome free foodie smartphone apps, we just had to share. Below are some apps we think you should download today!
Elixr
Elixir is the social network for mixology enthusiasts. Users can create their own profile and share pictures of their favorite cocktail, spirit, beer or wine with friends. Share a photo and add filters for additional flair, similar to Instagram. When posting your potion, you can tag your location and rate the beverage, and friends and followers can comment on your updates. Cheers to that!
Farmstand
Support locally-grown food at your surrounding farmers’ markets by downloading Farmstand, the ultimate farmers’ market app. Farmstand allows you to find farmers’ markets in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, New Zealand and more. You can share photos of your experiences, post deals, and share content with your Facebook and Twitter followers. Users can discover what is new in any farmers’ market with up-to-date information and then store their favorite findings for future reference.
Eat24 Order Food Delivery & Takeout

How Green Does Your Garden Grow, Sacramento?
One of my strongest memories involving food is from the vegetable garden my parents used to grow every summer in our backyard. The tomato plants would grow to tree-like proportions, the green beans were practically small shrubs, and the strawberries would peek like ruby gems from underneath their leaves. It was a veritable jungle with edible treasures – at least in my mind’s eye as a kid!
This is my first year planting a vegetable garden in my own backyard. While it is mostly hard work, a lot of experimentation and some mighty big “FAILS,” there is still a feeling of magic and appreciation as you watch the seeds sprout into plants and, ultimately, edibles.
Our first “harvest” – radishes straight from the ground (so good served raw with some butter and sea salt) and some miniature strawberries, eaten as is.
I have made some pretty big mistakes – I over planted the tomatoes (no one really needs eight plants), and I forgot to harvest the micro greens, so they were terribly bitter and the entire garden is going to be over crowded as I was a little ambitious. I am not sure if all of my plants will make it, but thank goodness for the good people at the Green Acres Nursery and the local Sacramento Vegetable Gardening Blog who have been invaluable resources for my little plot of land.
Overwhelmingly, I am gaining a deeper appreciation of where my food is coming from and the hard work it takes to produce it – whether it is from the farmers’ market or from my backyard. I am re-learning that food that comes straight out of the dirt and into your kitchen is incredibly tasty. I am excited to see that vegetable gardening is becoming rather chic, where anyone with a window and a pot can make something grow for their kitchen.
As the growing season continues, I will write frequently on how the garden is growing and what new ways I discover to incorporate my fresh produce into my meals and into summer entertaining. I will also write about individuals here in Sacramento who are growing and incorporating local and seasonal produce in their kitchens – big and small.
I want to know from you – are you backyard gardener? What are you harvesting right now and how are you preparing it? Do you know of Sacramento restaurants or individuals who are doing cool things with local grown food? Drop me a line – I might blog about you too!
Grange, Sacramento
Last week, fellow SacFoodie Brittany and I were lucky enough to be invited to a Farmer’s Market tour and lunch hosted by Chef Michael Tuohy of the much-praised Grange restaurant here in Sacramento. We joined a group of local “food enthusiasts” including Kimberley of Poor Girl Eats Well, Kristy of Cakegrrrl, Jonathan of Sacramento Press, Ann Rolke of Sacatomato, Greg of SacRag, Leigh Anne Keys of FOX 40 and the gals from Sacramento News & Review and Midtown Monthly for a tour of the Cesar Chavez Park Farmer’s Market from Chef Tuohy. The Chef pointed out his favorite vendors along the way, including Joe Gotelli & Sons cherries, Del Real Date Farm, Bariani Olive Oils and many more.
After the Farmer’s Market tour, we were treated to a beautiful lunch prepared by Chef Tuohy using the ingredients he had just picked up at the market – it doesn’t get any fresher than that! Our meal began with a amuse bouche of Spring Onion Soup with Crème fresh and chives, a perfect palate cleanser for what was to come.
The soup was followed by a spring asparagus salad with marinated beets, shaved jack cheese and local Bariani olive oil. The salad was just light enough that we were ready for more when the beautiful spring risotto arrived, which included peas, artichokes, asparagus and morel mushrooms – yum!
Finally, when we almost didn’t think we could take another bite, Pastry Chef Elaine Baker wowed us with a delicious fresh strawberry crostada with crème fresh and caramel sauce. Needless to say, there wasn’t a crumb left on our plates.
Thank you to Grange restaurant, Chef Tuohy and Elaine Baker for arranging this special treat!

Burgers & Brew
Are there two better words that start with “B”? I think not. Burgers & Brew is the latest spot in Davis for cozy outdoor dining any night of the week and also late-night food and drink Thursday through Saturday, when they’re open until 3 am. Moderately priced ($7 or so for a burger and fries) and full of bustling atmosphere, Burgers & Brew has become a go-to spot for Davis residents and passers-by alike. I know fellow Sac Foodie and Davisite Christine is also a big fan – she actually supplied the photo (above) of the fish sandwich – battered cod on a ciabatta roll with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a side of homemade tartar sauce.
Located at the corner of C and 3rd Streets, right next to Central Park (home to the Davis Farmer’s Market), Burgers & Brew obviously has a significant beer selection – for a heavenly burger/brew combo, try a Hoegaarden with the Turkey Avocado Cheeseburger and garlic fries. Delish! For vegetarians, or if you’re just not in a meat mood, try the Portabella Burger, it is so juicy and substantial, you don’t even miss the meat.
Also on the menu are chili, salads, sandwiches and fish and chips. Surprisingly, they also have a solid wine selection and serve 6 oz. glasses or 3 oz. pours, which are fun for any impromptu wine tasting. If going the wine route, start with the cheese plate – yes, I did just recommend the cheese plate at a restaurant called Burgers & Brew, just trust me.
One note: there is often an intimidating line formed on the sidewalk at the front of the restaurant, but don’t be deterred – it is usually just one large party waiting for a table. Parties of 2-4 are most often seated immediately, so just push by the group!
