We’re always excited about Tightwad Tuesdays but today we’re extra excited because this week it benefits a great cause.
This Wednesday, Maria Shriver and the California Restaurant Association (CRA) will be hosting the WE Are Family Day 2009 celebration. This Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m., 650 CRA member restaurants across the state will serve free meals to children with the purchase of an adult entrée, all in an effort to encourage families to simply spend some time eating a meal together.
Shriver and the CRA have teamed up for the past four years to bring Family Day events to cities throughout California. Their goal is to encourage families to spend more time doing activities that will strengthen relationships such as eating, playing and volunteering together.
Family Day is a national movement launched by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. The center’s research shows that children who eat dinner with their families are less likely to smoke, drink or use drugs.
Participating Sacramento restaurants include Boudin Bakery, Dos Coyotes Border Café, Round Table Pizza and Woody’s Grill and Bar.
For more information about Family Day and a list of participating restaurants, visit www.WEAreFamily.ca.gov.

Tightwad Tuesday: Our Favorite Happy Hour Spots
What could be better for a Tightwad Tuesday than our favorite happy hour suggestions? Here are a few of our local favorites for the occasional after-work drink and appetizer. We’d love to hear about yours as well, so leave us a comment below if you’ve got one to share!
Christine Schunk – “My favorite is Bistro 33 in Davis – their daily usual happy hour only goes until 6:30, which is too early for this working girl. But, on Monday nights they have Pub Quiz nights where happy hour goes late into the evening and is pretty entertaining. Plus, some of my favorite menu items are on the half price happy hour menu, including the Salt & Pepper Calamari and the Sweet Potato Fries with Three Dipping Sauces.”
Kim Bedwell – “Il Fornaio because it fulfills two main requirements: 1) It’s walking distance from the office and 2) Free food!”
Liz Conant – “A good patio is the selling point for me. I like Capitol Garage for the beer selection and happy hour prices. And, both the Rubicon and the Tower Café have great patios and both happen to have their best specials on Tuesdays.”
Brittany Mohr – “Tokyo Fros and McCormick & Schmick’s are my favorites: Tokyo Fros has delicious, high-quality sushi rolls for half price, which honestly just can’t be beat. McCormick & Schmick’s (a client of ours) offers full meals at their happy hour and unbelievable prices. My personal favorite is the tasty $2.95 cheeseburger with fries!”
Cecily Fuller – “Fuzio is a definite favorite when I’m in the Italian mood. Their Universal Pastas (a long list, all of which look delish) are half off every Wednesday. Then on Thursdays, bottles of their featured wine are half off. Tonight’s special event is a Heringer Estates wine tasting where $10 buys you a tasting flight and one free appetizer from 6pm-8pm!”
Tightwad Tuesday: Frugal Cooking Blogs We Love!
Okay, so even though we’re constantly hearing about all the great foodie deals around town, let’s face it: we can’t eat out every night! That’s why we’re loving these two blogs about how to cook at home on a budget.
Poor Girl Eats Well is written by Sacramento resident Kimberley Morales and we are consistently amazed by the dishes she puts together from items that we all probably have in the refrigerator! Her latest recipe for Pineapple Chicken Lettuce Wraps looks delish and at just $2.15 a serving it’s definitely affordable. In fact, her blog has become so popular, she was recently featured in the Sacramento Bee!
Another blogger to watch is Clara at Depression Cooking, a 93-year-old Sicilian-American who blogs about her experiences cooking during the Depression. Not only that, but her first cookbook, Clara’s Kitchen, will be released this October and is already available for pre-sale on Amazon.com! In the meantime, you can watch Clara prepare recipes like Pasta with Peas on her You Tube channel.
