Hopefully, you’ve finished the arduous task of completing your taxes for this year…and if not, well, you better get on it! Luckily, there is some light at the end of the tunnel – that’s right, Tax Day specials! There are quite a few to be had this year and what better way to celebrate having completed your taxes than by dining out – at a discount! Below are the specials we’ve heard about for Wednesday – leave us a comment if you know about something else!
P.F. Chang’s is offering diners 15 percent off on your entire bill if you dine at any of their restaurant locations on April 15 – that’s food and beverages! That’s reason enough for us to visit the Midtown location at 15th and J Street!
The McCormick & Schmick’s (a client of ours) Tax Relief Day special includes bottom line drink specials and select entrees for just $10.40! Plus, every taxpaying customer will receive a $10.40 tax relief dinner certificate for future use – now that’s a catch!
After our review a few weeks back, two free mini burgers and fries at The Counter is not a special we want to miss! Stop by the Roseville location from 3 to 5 p.m. and mention “The Counter Mini Tax Relief Plan” when you order to get the freebies.
If you’re planning on hitting the mall tomorrow, be sure to stop by Cinnabon – they’re handing out free CinnaBites from 5 to 8 p.m. on the 15th. The only thing better than cheap is free, right?
If you happen to live or work near the only Taco Del Mar in Sacramento, you’ll want to print out this coupon for a free tax day taco!
Finally, if it’s pizza you’re craving, Papa John’s is offering a large, original crust cheese pizza with three toppings for just $10.40 – this special is good April 13 – 15 only and you must order online.
Tightwad Tuesday: Take Me Out to the Ballgame
This Thursday is Opening Day for the Rivercats and we can’t wait to officially ring in the start of baseball season. There are a few seats left for the game, so if you don’t have tickets yet there’s still time!
Back in 2007 we shared a review of the Baked Potato with Pulled Pork and the Sactown Cheese Steak and we promise there will be more ballpark food reviews to come. But for now, we thought we’d fill you in on the best deals to be had at Raley Field this season. We spoke to a Rivercats representative who gave us the inside scoop:
Starting this Thursday for Opening Day, it’s the “Miller Lite Q and Brew” which features specials on burgers and sausages and $2 Miller Lites from 6 to 7 p.m. before the game starts. For Opening Day, the specials will begin an hour early when the gates open at 5 p.m.
“Tecate Tuesdays” are also back featuring specials on Tecate beer to go with your nachos – yum! And the best special of the week is to be had during Friday games, when you can feed the whole family for just a few dollars with the dollar hot dog and dollar ice cream specials – now that’s a deal!
See you at the ballgame!
Tightwad Tuesday: Happy Hour, Happy Wallet
It’s all over the news: people are eating out less and becoming more conscious of their food budgets. Love a good hamburger but don’t want to break the bank? We have good news that is guaranteed to fit the bill. One of our favorite happy hours (and an FH client, in the interest of full disclosure) is the one held by McCormick & Schmick’s – at which you will find a half-pound cheeseburger for just $1.95!
And that’s not all. If a burger isn’t what you’re drooling over, their happy hour menu includes a wide range of options. From pan-fried mozzarella to spicy chicken quesadilla – there’s something for everyone. My favorite part is that many locations have two happy hours every day; one in the evening right after work, and another from 9:30 to close. It’s probably best to call your local McCormick & Schmick’s for timing and menu details.
If you’re located in our neck of the woods, you have two options nearby:
Roseville
1194 Roseville Parkway
Roseville, CA 95678
Downtown Sacramento
1111 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
Business Traveler’s Tip: McCormick & Schmick’s has 94 restaurants throughout North America, so no matter which city you land in, odds are there’s a $1.95 burger with your name on it nearby.
Bon Appétit!
Rainy Day Tightwad Tuesday
An email graced my Inbox this afternoon that gave me a craving for oatmeal – yep, oatmeal! On this rainy day it looked so warm and delicious. Apparently Jamba Juice has launched the “Jamba Economic Boost,” where for the month of March their organic oats topped with fruit and brown sugar crumble is just $1. Download your coupon here.
Jamba says, “it’s just the stimulus your taste buds have been waiting for.” I haven’t tried it yet, but for a buck, it sure sounds like a deal to me!
Tightwad Tuesday Taqueria
In every city I’ve lived, I’ve always made a point to quickly locate the best nearby taqueria and promptly integrate it into my regular dining schedule. And by the best, I mean it has to be close to my house, fast, cheap and serve good food, of course. A great selection on the salsa bar doesn’t hurt either. Los Jarritos on Broadway not only meets my criteria, but exceeds it.
Here’s why: I don’t think there’s anything on the menu that costs more than $5 – at least nothing I’ve ordered. That includes full entrees with rice and beans. Another plus is the generous sides of guacamole for 25 cents! I don’t know another place that offers guac for 25 cents – needless to say I always add a few to my order. Tortilla chips are free and the salsa bar offers plenty of choices. Finally, the employees at Los Jarritos are always friendly and orders come out fast – for dine-in or take-out.
I’ve tried a number of menu items and my standby is the Super Veggie Burrito for $4.50. But on this particular occasion I went with a Chicken, Beans and Cheese quesadilla for about $3. All things considered, you really can’t go wrong with a quesadilla and this one was no exception.
My dining companion went with Tres Sopas for around $4 – another cheap and filling menu offering. But he raves about his usual order, a Torta with beef and pork carnitas, which is basically a Mexican sandwich.
Los Jarritos has become my standby for those nights when the fridge is empty and I don’t want to travel very far. So if you’re in Land Park and looking for a cheap place to get a filling meal, I suggest you give Los Jarritos a try.
