In every city I’ve lived, I’ve always made a point to quickly locate the best nearby taqueria and promptly integrate it into my regular dining schedule. And by the best, I mean it has to be close to my house, fast, cheap and serve good food, of course. A great selection on the salsa bar doesn’t hurt either. Los Jarritos on Broadway not only meets my criteria, but exceeds it.
Here’s why: I don’t think there’s anything on the menu that costs more than $5 – at least nothing I’ve ordered. That includes full entrees with rice and beans. Another plus is the generous sides of guacamole for 25 cents! I don’t know another place that offers guac for 25 cents – needless to say I always add a few to my order. Tortilla chips are free and the salsa bar offers plenty of choices. Finally, the employees at Los Jarritos are always friendly and orders come out fast – for dine-in or take-out.
I’ve tried a number of menu items and my standby is the Super Veggie Burrito for $4.50. But on this particular occasion I went with a Chicken, Beans and Cheese quesadilla for about $3. All things considered, you really can’t go wrong with a quesadilla and this one was no exception.
My dining companion went with Tres Sopas for around $4 – another cheap and filling menu offering. But he raves about his usual order, a Torta with beef and pork carnitas, which is basically a Mexican sandwich.
Los Jarritos has become my standby for those nights when the fridge is empty and I don’t want to travel very far. So if you’re in Land Park and looking for a cheap place to get a filling meal, I suggest you give Los Jarritos a try.

The Quest for the Best Mexican Food Begins
As we’ve mentioned before, we are prone to impromptu foodie debates around the office. Although the best French fries debate was heated, it was nothing compared to the “What’s your favorite Mexican food?” e-mail conversation which took place last week. When it was clear the answer couldn’t be determined via e-mail, we moved the debate to more familiar territory: the kitchen white board. All the talk led us to realize that there was no alternative: we’d have to take it to the blog and officially deem this week “Best Mexican Food” week on Sac Foodies. We invite you to study both our white board debate and some choice excerpts from our e-mail chain as we prepare to present you with a week’s worth of our favorite Mexican food eateries from the Sacramento area. But we need your input, so leave us a comment below if you already know your favorite, or if there’s a place you’d like us to review.
From the emails exchanged last week:
Shelly – “My vote will be for Paco’s in Woodland. It’s drive-worthy.”
Kim – “I want Mexican food right now! Oh wait, that wasn’t the question. I love La Fiesta Mexicana on Elvas in my neighborhood. We go there nearly every week and I love the people who work there. I will miss it when I move.”
Jenna (in response to Kim) – “When you move, you’ll be closer to Emma’s Taco House in West Sac. I’m sorry, but if we are giving points for the margaritas, then they win.”
Christine – “I want cheese for dinner now.”
Simply Recipes Named One of the World’s Top Food Blogs
The London Times just published a list of the 50 best food blogs around the world and while SacFoodies didn’t make the list (maybe next year), one local Sacramento blogger did! Number 21 on the top 50 list belongs to Sacramento’s own Elise Bauer’s Simply Recipes blog. This is a truly spectacular blog with delicious, easy-to-prepare recipes and professional-quality photography that makes the food sing!
As a carrot cake fan, I’m definitely going to try out Elise’s version which features pineapple and coconut that she posted this weekend.
Congratulations to Simply Recipes on this great honor!
Last-Minute Valentine's Weekend Suggestions
If you’re still not sure about Valentine’s Day plans and our suggestions earlier this week didn’t inspire you, here are a few last minute ideas for fun things to do over the weekend:
Catch a glimpse of Lance while watching the Amgen Tour of California at Spataro. The restaurant will be open for lunch and has an outdoor bar with bleacher seating for prime Lance-spotting. They will also have the finish line displayed on a giant LCD screen.
Head to McCormick & Schmick’s for a great deal on Valentine’s Dinner. For $29.95, enjoy a steak & lobster dinner with a choice of soup or salad and a signature chocolate dessert. This special is available now through Sunday.
The L Wine Lounge is taking reservations for dinner on Saturday. The meal will include oysters, Dungeness crab and prosciutto fritters, Tuscan white bean soup and duck confit – paired with a delicious assortment of wines, of course.
Be one of the first to try what is sure to become one of the hottest (literally!) restaurants in town: The Hot Italian will be open this weekend with a short and sweet version of the menu plus in-house DJ’s on Saturday and Sunday night!
If you’re craving something sweet, visit a local Krispy Kreme now through Valentine’s Day and experience love at first bite with delicious heart-shaped doughnuts that are both adorable and affordable.
Whatever your plans turn out to be, Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
Tightwad Tuesday: Valentine's Day Edition
Still looking for something to do with your sweetheart this weekend, but don’t want to spend a ton of dough? Consider spending just $10 each for you and your honey to taste delicious ports and chocolates from five different wineries.
The Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg , only about 15 minutes away from downtown Sac, will be hosting a Port & Chocolate Lovers Weekend on February 14 and 15. I am certainly a lover of both port and chocolate, and particularly the combo, so my significant other and I will definitely be there.
Of the five participating wineries, I have only previously tasted port from Carvalho Family Winery, which has both a ruby and tawny variety, and each was equally delicious. I am usually a tawny port girl, but the ruby was so full of intense berry flavors, that I just couldn’t pick a favorite.
I can’t wait to try the port offerings from the other wineries: Heringer Estates, Todd Taylor, Solomon Wine Co. and Revolution Wines – each have a tasting room within the Old Sugar Mill. Revolution is interesting to note – they opened a tasting room in midtown last year and were hailed as Sacramento’s first “urban winery,” but continue to also have a tasting room at the Old Sugar Mill.
If you check it out, let us know what you thought!
