Whether you’re hosting or a guest at an upcoming Easter celebration, the Bunny Bread from Freeport Bakery is a must this weekend. I purchased my first Bunny Bread last year and I won’t go another Easter without it! As the host, it serves as an adorable table decoration that both the kids and adults loved. When brunch is served, it’s equally delicious! The buttery egg bread is terrific at room temperature (one less thing in the oven!) and complements traditional Easter fare perfectly. For only $11.95, you can’t beat the convenience and great taste. It’s wrapped beautifully so pick one up as a hostess gift or offer to bring the bread to Easter brunch if you’re an invited guest. I ordered mine today for pick-up on Saturday. I couldn’t resist the adorable Easter Basket Cake, Easter-themed cookies, and Fudge Easter Eggs while I was at it! Everyone's Irish on March 17!
For whatever reason – the color green, quality Irish beer, an excuse to celebrate – St. Patrick’s Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. When I was younger, my mom used to make green pancakes every St. Patrick’s Day to start it off on the right foot. So last night I had a festive thought – what better way to spread a little green cheer than by carrying on the tradition and bringing my own green pancakes to the office?! Here’s a virtual green pancake from the Sac Foodies to you:
Tightwad Tuesday: St. Patrick's Day Edition
First off, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! We hope you remembered to wear something green today – if you didn’t, here’s a “virtual pinch” from the Sac Foodies.
On Friday, we posted a list of some of the events and activities going on around the Sacramento area in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and there are many more that didn’t make the list. But let’s face it: a night out on the town isn’t cheap, especially on a holiday. So for this week’s Tightwad Tuesday, let’s take a look at how you can celebrate St. Paddy’s Day at home without breaking the bank.
Corned beef and cabbage is a staple of Irish celebrations around this time of year. Raley’s has corned beef brisket flats on sale for just $2.47 per pound, through today. Check out the weekly ad for a coupon for free cabbage with the purchase of beef. (Thanks to the Sacramento Bee’s bargain queen Pam Dinsmore for this tip.) Pam also features some easy recipes to make your St. Patrick’s Day special and (most importantly) simple, including one from SeasonalRecipes.com for Corned Beef and Cabbage in Guinness Stout. It doesn’t get much more Irish than that!
Believe it or not, you don’t have to travel to your local Irish pub to enjoy a green beer tonight. It’s easy to create your own at home using green food coloring from the grocery store. Head over to the DIY Life website for the step-by-step process. According to the green beer experts, you can use either blue or green food coloring, but we like the deep green color that can only be achieved when you use green. Just make sure you use enough drops of coloring. Make a statement! No one likes a slight green tinge to their beer.
The Sac Foodies wish you the best of luck in bringing home a slice of Dublin this St. Patrick’s Day!
Paint the Town Green!
An impromptu poll of the Sac Foodies revealed that St. Patrick’s Day is a favorite holiday for many of us. Considering it doesn’t require any gifts and revolves around food and fun, it’s no big surprise that we like it! It seems like Sacramento does, too, judging by the number of St. Patrick’s Day-themed events going on in the coming days. Let us know what your plans will be on the 17th by leaving a comment below! And don’t forget to wear green!
Is work or another commitment keeping you from celebrating St. Patrick’s Day actually on St. Patrick’s Day? Not to worry – head over to Fanny Ann’s Saloon in Old Sacramento on Saturday, March 14 for their Pre-St. Patrick’s Day Bash. They’ll have green beer and corned beef sandwiches all day. A $5 cover begins at 9:00 p.m., with the proceeds donated to the Firefighters Burn Institute.
The real fun is, of course, to be had on Tuesday, and Sacramento area bars and restaurants are pulling out all the stops to make St. Pat’s Day 2009 one to remember. De Vere’s Irish Pub and Mix Downtown are teaming up to bring you Sacramento’s first “Get Your Irish Up!” St. Patrick’s Day Block Party from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m. on L Street, between 15th and 16th Streets (right in front of the newly renovated Firestone Building). Festivities include live performances by Tainted Love and Shakedown. Tickets are available for $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
Because we know everyone loves a parade, we thought you’d like to know Old Sacramento’s 13th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade gets underway Tuesday at 6:00 pm. The family-friendly event includes Irish step dancers, bagpipers, colorful costumed marchers, school bands and much more!
Does the holiday have you in the mood for an authentic St. Patrick’s Day meal? All three Café Bernardo locations (Davis, Midtown and R Street) will be serving up a special corned beef and cabbage dish all week long. Or, head over to Brew It Up! Brewery & Grill for their St. Pat’s Day Party, which includes a Dublin-inspired pub lunch or dinner of corned beef and cabbage, beer steamed mussels, bangers and mash and Shepherd’s Pie. Happy hour will feature Celtic songs and Irish pub music and the opportunity to eat, drink and be merry in the outdoor beer garden, also known as the Leprechaun Lounge!
Other places you might want to check out on St. Patrick’s Day include Streets of London, O’Mally’s Irish Pub, Gallagher’s Irish Pub or Bonn Lair. For those of you who want to get a head start on festivities, check out The Graduate in Davis, where the drinks start flowing bright and early at 6:00 a.m. on St. Patrick’s Day!

Last-Minute Valentine's Weekend Suggestions
If you’re still not sure about Valentine’s Day plans and our suggestions earlier this week didn’t inspire you, here are a few last minute ideas for fun things to do over the weekend:
Catch a glimpse of Lance while watching the Amgen Tour of California at Spataro. The restaurant will be open for lunch and has an outdoor bar with bleacher seating for prime Lance-spotting. They will also have the finish line displayed on a giant LCD screen.
Head to McCormick & Schmick’s for a great deal on Valentine’s Dinner. For $29.95, enjoy a steak & lobster dinner with a choice of soup or salad and a signature chocolate dessert. This special is available now through Sunday.
The L Wine Lounge is taking reservations for dinner on Saturday. The meal will include oysters, Dungeness crab and prosciutto fritters, Tuscan white bean soup and duck confit – paired with a delicious assortment of wines, of course.
Be one of the first to try what is sure to become one of the hottest (literally!) restaurants in town: The Hot Italian will be open this weekend with a short and sweet version of the menu plus in-house DJ’s on Saturday and Sunday night!
If you’re craving something sweet, visit a local Krispy Kreme now through Valentine’s Day and experience love at first bite with delicious heart-shaped doughnuts that are both adorable and affordable.
Whatever your plans turn out to be, Have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
