One of the things I love about Sacramento is stumbling upon a corner of earth, right in the middle of our urban landscape, that some lovely soul has decided to farm. It’s a beautiful thing to see acres of fruit trees in the middle of a residential neighborhood, or a strawberry patch nestled between a grocery store and a tract of homes. These open spaces give our fair city the kind of topography that sets it apart from the concrete jungles out there. And, of course, the resulting fruit stands that feature an assortment of color-drenched, just-picked fruit (and vegetables) feels a little like a gift.
I have a favorite strawberry stand in my neighborhood that sells delicious strawberries, cherries and an assortment of in-season vegetables. The strawberry varietals vary as the season progresses, but each is beloved. Whether washed and eaten, sliced over cake, in a smoothie or shake, or spread across my kitchen counter in my yearly quest to “put up” jam, strawberries have always been a symbol of spring and summer, sunshine and warmth, as well as delectable sweetness.
One of my favorite desserts is fresh strawberries over angel food cake. My mom used to make this simple dessert for us a lot during the summer, and there were never any leftovers. In honor of Mother’s Day, my family will be enjoying this (practically) guilt-free dessert.

Avocado, Mango & Tomato Salsa Recipe
I love everything about a perfectly ripe mango. From its vibrant sunset colors, to its rich, subtly sweet and slightly tangy flavor – mangoes are my all-time favorite fruit.
On a recent trip to the grocery store, I decided to spice things up with this beloved fruit by adding it to a simple salsa recipe I’ve created countless times before.
This recipe is healthy, delicious and slightly addicting. As an incredibly easy snack (or app, or topping), it’s perfect paired with your favorite chips for hot days by the pool, lazy nights in, or topped on grilled halibut for dinner. The best part about this salsa (other than the fact that it has mangoes) is that it requires less than 10 ingredients and less than 10 minutes to make. Enjoy!

Things to Eat and Drink in Seattle
My recommendations on things to eat and drink in Seattle, based on a recent weekend trip. Clockwise from the top:
1. Oysters! Need I say more? On this particular weekend trip, I enjoyed them at Matt’s at the Market (my favorite Pike’s Place dining destination), Elliott’s (classic waterfront dining) and the Walrus & the Carpenter (trendy atmosphere and great music).
2. Storyville Coffee. A new discovery on this trip which quickly became part of our daily rotation. Definitely the sleekest-looking coffee shop I’ve ever seen. Oh, and great coffee and pastries too.
3. An English Bulldog cocktail from Staple & Fancy. Order it…you’ll thank me later.
4. Staple & Fancy. If you’re like us, you’ll enjoy a “first course” next door at Walrus & the Carpenter while you wait for your table at Staple & Fancy. Get the pasta!
5. The Monkfish at Pike’s Place. Get a little closer. A little closer. Get right up next to him now. Ahhh…he’s alive!!! Observing this gag never gets old at the market!
6. The coldest beer in the frostiest mug you’ll ever have from The Athenian in Pike’s Place. This Seattle institution also happens to be famous for hosting Tom Hanks and Rob Reiner for lunch in a scene in the movie “Sleepless in Seattle.”
Celebrate the Kentucky Derby with a Mint Julep
The Kentucky Derby takes place tomorrow, which means it’s time for getting out your best spring attire, donning your favorite fancy hat and mixing up southern-inspired libations.
Whether you’re planning on tuning in and sipping from home or at a local establishment, we’ve got you covered!
Berkeley Bar, located in the Pavilions Shopping Center, will be mixing up Mint Juleps and serving southern-inspired bites all day on Saturday for your enjoyment. The energy is sure to be buzzing with locals cheering on Northern California native “California Chrome” (anticipated winner) from Yuba City. If you’re planning on hosting your own gathering, the folks at Berkeley Bar have provided the classic Mint Julep recipe below. Cheers and happy viewing!
Mint Julep Recipe
Ingredients
6 fresh mint leaves 3 tsp powdered sugar
2oz bourbon
ice
Directions
1. Place 4 mint leaves in the bottom of a pre-chilled silver julep cup. Add the powdered sugar and a few drops of bourbon. Using a muddler, muddle the mixture well to dissolve the sugar and release the oil and aroma of the mint.
2. Add the remaining bourbon and fill cup with crushed or cubed ice.
3. Stir well and garnish with the remaining mint leaves.
