Summertime produces the best tomatoes and there is no better place to enjoy them than at the Capay Tomato Festival in the beautiful Capay Valley. Farm Fresh to You, the home delivery service that provides fresh, local, organic produce to consumers’ doorsteps invites you to join in this 7th annual event on Saturday, July 19, 2014, from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Event-goers will enjoy organic, heirloom and cherry tomato tasting, live music and dancing, delicious food, local wine and beer, tractor tram rides, kids’ activities, camping on the farm and more. Pack a blanket, pull up a hay bale and watch the sunset – all the while supporting a good cause with event proceeds benefiting the Kathleen Barsotti Non-Profit for Sustainable Agriculture.
This year, guests are encouraged to bring a picnic to enter into the “Best Guest Picnic Contest.” Farm staff will roam the event, scouting out the best-looking picnic for a chance to win future fresh produce deliveries. No picnic? No problem. Local purveyors will be selling their wares including sandwiches, tacos, burritos, roasted corn, pizzas, gelato, in addition to vegetarian and vegan choices.
Tickets are on sale through Wednesday, July 17, for $20 per person (children ages 12 and under are free). After July 17, tickets will be sold at the door for $25 per person. SacFoodies is giving away two tickets to the event, so post a comment on our SacFoodies Facebook page telling us why you want to attend for your chance to win!

Smells like Sweet Summertime on Capitol Mall
There are few things I look forward to more than the Thursday Farmers Market on Capitol Mall. Every Thursday, now through September, Capitol Mall employees come out from behind their desks and cubicle walls, and flood the streets in search of food truck eats and feel-good, California-grown goodies—flowers and produce! With all of the action happening directly outside of our office, Thursdays look a lot like Christmas morning for the Sacfoodies crew.
The market might be running through September, but trust me it’ll be coming to a close before you know it! So, use it as an excuse to step outside and enjoy the heart of Sacramento on 6th Capitol Mall, Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Review: Sac Beer & Chili Festival
This past Saturday, I got to check out the Sacramento Beer & Chili Festival in Fremont Park. You can read more about this event on SacFoodies here.
After a whirlwind hour or two of beer and chili tasting, my favorites from the day were:
- Chili – Industry category: the spicy hot chili from Blackbird
- Chili – Individual category: the pork green chili from Piglets
- Beer: for me, nothing beats the first taste of Hell or High Watermelon from 21st Amendment Brewery every summer!
It looked like everyone was having a blast at this event on Saturday. If you missed it this year, there is always 2015!
FREE BREAKFAST AND COFFEE FRIDAY AT MAYAHUEL
Weekday breakfasts may be one of my most favorite things. Saturdays and Sundays pack them in and you always face an impending wait. But on a weekday, when I should be at work and there are less people dining out, it seems as if going out to breakfast is more of a treat.
Now what’s a bigger treat than a free breakfast … and on a weekday no less? Well that’s what is happening this Friday, March 7 in Downtown Sacramento. Mayahuel on K Street is introducing its new breakfast menu by giving away free breakfast tacos and burritos as well as cups of delicious Pacha Coffee. Here’s the skinny:

Edible Gardens Tour

Have you ever wanted to start a vegetable garden but can’t seem to figure out where to begin? If so, you’re in luck because we found the perfect event for you!
This Saturday, September 14, marks the third-annual Edible Gardens Tour brought to you by Soroptimist International Sacramento, Inc. The day will feature six uniquely beautiful East Sacramento homes demonstrating how traditional vegetable gardening can be incorporated into residential landscaping. The demonstrations will also have a Master Gardener onsite to answer any questions you may have and impart valuable gardening wisdom for anyone eager to learn!
The tour lasts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will also include fabulous door prizes and entertainment by the talented musicians of the Sacramento Symphonic Winds. The best part is that all proceeds of the tour will benefit the Tubman House, a local service dedicated to helping at-risk children and women.
Tickets are $20 each before the event and $25 the day of the event. Kids ages 12 and under are free so bring the whole family!
For more information please visit the event website or call (916) 709-6748.
