You know you’re a bacon-lover if….
1. You have a side of eggs with your bacon for breakfast
2. You buy Costco packs and stock up your freezer… the thick-cut hickory style stuff, of course!
3. You’re more afraid of bacon shortages than power outages
4. Your childhood nickname was “Porky”
5. You already own this t-shirt or deeply wish you did:
If you found yourself nodding in agreement to one of the above statements, then you, my fellow bacon-lover, should be excited to know it is Sacramento BLT Week! Put on by BaconFest Sacramento, BLT Week features local chefs, restaurants, and their all-natural, quality bacon dishes. Basically, it’s an opportunity to enjoy bacon-filled sandwiches and revel in crispy, crunchy explosions of flavor. What’s not to love about that?
Highlights include a BLT, Bourbon, & Brats party at Block Butcher Bar this Thursday and a BLT demo by Chef Patrick Mulvaney this Saturday at the Midtown Farmers Market.

Smells like Sweet Summertime on Capitol Mall
There are few things I look forward to more than the Thursday Farmers Market on Capitol Mall. Every Thursday, now through September, Capitol Mall employees come out from behind their desks and cubicle walls, and flood the streets in search of food truck eats and feel-good, California-grown goodies—flowers and produce! With all of the action happening directly outside of our office, Thursdays look a lot like Christmas morning for the Sacfoodies crew.
The market might be running through September, but trust me it’ll be coming to a close before you know it! So, use it as an excuse to step outside and enjoy the heart of Sacramento on 6th Capitol Mall, Thursdays from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Watermelon Pico de Gallo
I’ve finally found the perfect combination of sweet and spicy and the ingredients have been right under my nose this whole time. In fact, I decided to try this new recipe from one of my favorite bloggers, Ree Drummond of The Pioneer Woman.
As you know, the theme of our 6th Annual SacFoodies Potluck was Farm-to-Fork, so I needed a delicious recipe with locally available and in-season ingredients. Lo and behold, I came across Ree’s easy recipe and gorgeous photos and my mind was made up—Watermelon Pico de Gallo for everyone! Not only was this one of the prettiest side dishes, it was one of the easiest. I was able to buy the peppers, onion and watermelon from the Thursday Farmers Market on Capitol Mall and the other ingredients I already happened to have at home!
Try The Pioneer Woman’s recipe for Watermelon Pico de Gallo:
Yield 12 Servings
Ingredients
- 1/2 whole small seedless Watermelon, diced
- 1/2 whole Red Onion, diced
- 1 whole Red Bell Pepper, seeded and diced
- 1 whole Green Bell Pepper, seeded and finely diced
- 1 whole Yellow Bell Pepper, seeded and finely diced
- 2 whole Jalapeños, seeded and finely diced
- 1 whole bunch Cilantro, chopped
- Juice Of 1 To 2 Limes
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
Preparation Instructions
1. Throw all the ingredients into a large bowl and toss it together. Taste with a chip and adjust ingredients as needed.
2. Serve with chips or on top of grilled chicken or fish…or as a side salad!
Sacramento is America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital
By: Jake Ferguson and Jon Schuller
With the smell of rain in the air, the last farmers market of the season in Cesar Chavez Plaza was the perfect setting for a major announcement from Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson this morning.
Known popularly as The River City or The City of Trees, Sacramento can now lay claim to an exciting new moniker: America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital!
Surrounded by a sea of white chefs’ coats, Mayor Johnson was joined by nearly three dozen of the area’s top culinary talent to announce the new proclamation to an excited crowd of media, local officials and foodie enthusiasts.
“Right here in Sacramento, we have a lot to be proud of,” said the former NBA star and Sacramento native. “This is the best of Sacramento. This is the Dream Team of chefs in Sacramento!”
In conjunction with the Sacramento Convention & Visitors Bureau, the California Farm Bureau, and a coalition of local chefs, today’s proclamation is intended to market Sacramento as a farm-fresh culinary hub. According to the mayor’s office (and cited in today’s City Beat blog), the region is home to between 7,000 to 8,000 acres of “boutique farms” and touts more than 50 farmers’ markets.
Randall Selland of Ella Dining Room+Bar and Selland’s Market & Café helped further illustrate that connection to local agriculture—literally.
Taste of Davis 2011
When people ask me where I grew up, I usually respond by saying “Davis, California” followed at lightning-speed by a supporting qualifier: “It’s just outside of Sacramento.” But more and more, I’m noticing there’s no need to put my hometown on the map in such a way. Lately, my response has been met with comments such as “Oh, I have a friend that went to UC Davis” or “Yes, I’ve heard of the great Farmers Market they have there.”
Whether you know Davis like the back of your hand or have never made the jaunt down I-80 West (no, a stop at In-N-Out on Olive Drive en route to/from Tahoe does NOT count), there’s an event around the corner that you don’t want to miss.
Taste of Davis is back this Friday, March 18 from 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Center. This is the second annual Taste of Davis hosted by the Davis Chamber of Commerce, and I was fortunate enough to attend last year, so I’m speaking from experience when I say it’s worth your while. The evening will showcase bites and sips from more than 30 restaurants, caterers, wineries, breweries, and other local businesses.
Tickets are $50 in advance or $65 at the door. Alternatively, you can purchase tickets by phone at 530-756-5160 or online HERE. Hurry – the event sold out last year!
